Since Korean Education was first established as an academic discipline in South Korea in 1959, there has been great strides made in the study of the Korean language amid interest of many different countries in the world. According to a statistical by the Ministry of Justice entitled “the state of international students’ sojourn,” there are 102,117 international students staying in South Korea as of the end of September 2015, a near threefold increase from 10 years ago, when there were 32,557 such students in 2006.
South Korea went through a brief period of stagnation, but it served to create the foundations on which to build up, and interest in Korean education has never let up ever since thanks to the coming together of many different factors, including Korea’s economic growth, establishing diplomatic relations with ex-communist countries, the mighty Korean Wave, and government efforts to attract more international students such as by way of setting up pertinent policies.
Initially, those who learned the Korean language in South Korea did so for the purposes of being able to do missionary work or for other special work-related purposes. But today, many learn Korean simply out of their interest and curiosity about the country and others also do so for their own personal purposes which include getting a job, living in South Korea, and going onto graduate school.
However, with a decline in student population and excessive supply in the high education market, it became more difficult for universities in the country to attract new students and many universities, having become acutely aware of the need to attract students from beyond the border, are making huge efforts to this end.
Attracting international students is a way for universities in the Seoul metropolitan region to increase their international competitiveness, especially those that have no difficulty attracting new students, and for the smaller universities that do have a hard time attracting new students, it is an opportunity to increase their student enrollment and it helps with their financing. Consequently, universities in different parts of the country are making great efforts to attract international students.
Many studies on Korean education are being done primarily with respect to educational institutions situated in the Seoul metropolitan area. But the provinces have seen a rapid rise in the number of international students who want to learn Korean, so studies on Korean education taking place in the provinces are also an urgent matter.
In this , the country is classified into the Seoul metropolitan area and the provinces in examining the state of university-affiliated educational institutions. It surveys Chinese international students who are studying Korean at these university-affiliated educational institutions, both in the Seoul metropolitan area and in the provinces, to find out the differences between the two different regional classifications. Based on the results, it suggest an effective learning plan for Chinese students studying Korean at educational institutions in Gwangju and Jeollado.
It is deemed that this provides a direction for the kind of efforts that are needed to make it more effective for international students’ learning of Korean, who are doing so not only in the Seoul metropolitan area but in the provinces as well.
