This study was intended to consider the indirect speech acts as an object of discussion among the pragmatic compentence by Korean language learners and to examine whether this indirect speech acts could be reflected in the KFL textbook.
Generally, the certain language should be interpreted in consideration of the context that it is used. Therefore, for the smooth communication, the grammatical compentence of the language and the pragmatic compentence are required at the same time. Particularly, as a lot of socio-cultural natures are reflected in the indirect speech acts, if a situation of the pragmatic failure happens through the improper use of the indirect speech acts or the wrong understanding, it can offend the other party or bring the severance of the conversation. Therefore, the systematic education on the indirect speech acts should be done in the Korean language education and it was judged to be necessary to induce learners to be exposed to the indirect speech acts actively for this. 3 kinds of textbooks considered as a study target in this study are the integrated textbooks which are being used as the regular curriculum by the 3 main Korean language education institutions. All ratings were chosen to examine the difference on the rating-indirect speech acts suggestion ratio, and as the subject dealt with by this study is pragmatic, the textbooks which were published most recently and aimed at the improvement of the communication compentence were chosen.
The scope of the analysis was limited as follows. Since the indirect speech acts was the pragmatic means existing in the relationship with the conversation participants and usually appeared in the colloquial situation, the conversation sentences of the textbooks were mainly analyzed in this .
The quantitative analysis and the qualitative analysis were used together. The analysis procedure is as follows. First of all, for the quantitative analysis, an indirect speech acts is extracted according to the arranged standard by this study among conversation sentences which appeared throughout all ratings of the integrated KFL textbook. Then, an analysis on the frequency and ratio of the indirect speech acts among the entire dialogic sentences was conducted. For the qualitative analysis, the indirect speech acts presented in the textbook was divided into the functional aspect and the situational aspect of the speech acts for analysis. The aspect of the indirect speech acts presented in the KFL textbook could be examined through this analysis. Also, the improvements of the textbook for the indirect speech acts education were suggested on the basis of this result.
The analytic result of this textbook was divided into the quantitative analysis and the qualitative analysis to summarize. As a result of the quantitative analysis, it was confirmed the KFL textbook did not consider the standard on suggesting the indirect speech acts. Although the indirect speech acts should be suggested more in the intermediate and advanced level than the elementary simple sentences, that phenomenon was not discovered in the KFL textbook.
As a result of the qualitative analysis, while the indirect speech acts of the request and proposal presented as the highest ratio in the functional aspect of the speech acts, the indirect speech acts of the refusal was very insufficient relatively. As for the situational aspect, the indirect speech acts was suggested the most in the dialogic sentences under the informal, intimate, and equal relationship. Therefore, the textbook improvement scheme was suggested by setting up a goal of the Korean language indirect speech acts education and composing contents on the basis of these results of the textbook analysis.
The study result of this thesis implies the textbook needs to be complemented and improved to improve the pragmatic compentence of Korean language learners. It is expected stereotyping the indirect speech acts that can present learners a specific situation and be used following the speech acts will be helpful to cultivating the learner's pragmatic compentence.
