본고에서는 한국어, 중국어, 영어의 지시대명사가 담화표지로 문법화하는 과정을 살펴보고자 하였다. 특히 담화표지가 접속사로 문법화하는 중간과정을 거치는 것은 유형론적으로 같은 경향을 보임에 주목하였다.
현재에도 문자의 구조와 의미를 연구하는 분야가 여전히 중시되고 있지만, 언어의 화용론적 연구의 중요성은 새롭게 인식되고 있다. 이는 화용을 연구함으로써 더 많은 언어현상에 대한 해석을 얻어낼 수 있기 때문이다.
현대중국어 ‘这’와 ‘那’의 연구 또한 이와 같은 과정을 거치고 있다. 먼저, 지시대명사로서의 연구에 있어서 기존의 학자들은 주로 ‘这’, ‘那’의 통사적 측면에서 연구를 진행하였다. 다음으로 ‘这’, ‘那’의 의미와 화용적 측면에서 연구를 진행하였고, 그 후 담화표지로서 즉 담화적 측면에서 연구하였다.
중국어 ‘这’, ‘那’ 외에 한국어 ‘이’, ‘그’, ‘저’, 영어 ‘that’ 등도 담화표지로 기능한다. 그 어원은 지시대명사인 ‘这’, ‘那’, ‘이’, ‘그’, ‘저’, ‘that’이다.

This thesis aims to examine the process of grammaticalization, which changes from demonstrative pronouns to discourse markers in Korean, Chinese, and English. It is especially focused on the typological classification of the three languages which experiences the same process of changing from discourse markers to conjunctions in the middle of grammaticalization.
Although the study on the structure and the meaning of the sentences is still being focused, the importance of pragmatics of languages has been newly recognized. This is because it can be obtained much more analysis of the phenomenon of languages by developing a pragmatic study.
The study on the modern Chinese ‘这/那’ also goes through this process. First, most of previous researches of the demonstrative pronouns focused on mainly describing the syntactic aspects of ‘这/那’. Next, the research on the meaning and pragmatic aspects of ‘这/那’ has been followed. And it is being studied in the discourse aspects of ‘这/那’ as a discourse marker.
Not only the Chinese ‘这/那’, but the Korean ‘이/그/저’ and the English ‘that’ also are functioning as discourse markers. The etymology of the words are the pronouns, ‘这/那’, ‘이/그/저’, and ‘that’.
