The purpose of this study is to analyze the needs for developing curriculum in Korean for mission purposes by focusing on Hanbyul Christian Academy in Ethiopia. Chapter one discusses the need for this study. Although study of Korean for mission puposes (KMP) is an important part of Korean for specific purposes (KSP), the number of studies on this topic is low. After reviewing nine studies which were done prior to this study, as a task for Korean for mission purposes, needs analysis for developing systematic curriculum was necessary. Among many different forms of ‘needs’ this study focuses on analyzing the ‘lacks’, ‘expectation’ and ‘requirements’ Chapter two investigates the theory on Korean for mission purpose, needs analysis, and syllabus design. In order to develop curriculum for KMP, characteristics of KMP need to be taken into account. When analyzing needs, both the needs of the students and teachers should be identified as well as necessary vocabularies. Also, the most suitable syllabus for KMP are topical or content-based syllabus and lexical syllabus. In chapter three, to better understand the three needs, ‘lacks’, ‘expectation’ and ‘requirements’ detailed study methods are suggested. In order to understand ‘lacks’ this study analyzed Hanbyul Christian Academy’s Korean program, and inquired current issues and areas that require improvement. When the program was analyzed, the following standards were used: ‘purpose and goal of the program’, ‘teaching-learning situation’, ‘teaching-learning content’ and ‘teaching-learning assessment.’ To better understand ‘expectation’ teachers and students were divided into two groups to inquire each of their needs. Interviews were conducted for the teachers and questionnaires were given to 110 adolescents students at Hanbyul Christian Academy. To explore ‘requirements’ for Korean program for mission purpose, ‘vocabularies of mission’ that students need to know were selected. To select vocabularies, this study use compromise way, corpus was used on frequency analysis, and mission expert performed determined important degree. Chapter four summarizes the study’s results. By analyzing the Korean program, the following problems were observed: differences in number of students per class, insufficient number of adequate textbook, lack of educational apparatus, absence of Korean program for the purpose of mission. Second, interviews with teachers helped to understand they were anticipating for a program that could accomplish both mission and improving Korean linguistic skills. Interviews also helped to reveal that the teachers were hoping there would be a balance between teacher-to-student ratio per class, and improvement of vernacular language usage in class. The students expressed that classes were helpful and that they enjoyed activities by working with a partner through questionnaires. They also were hoping to improve their speaking and listening abilities. If they were given the choice to learn about Christianity, they wanted to learn about the Bible. Third, 108 nouns were selected and written into <Vocabularies of Mission Purpose for Adolescents>, a list made through vocabulary selection process. In chapter five, by taking needs analysis into consideration, an actual syllabus was designed. In order to design the syllabus, 11-week Special Course was organized by taking the environment and situation of Hanbyul Christian Academy, and Christian contents into consideration. Chapter six is the conclusion of this study. It sums up the general contents, indicates limitations, and presents suggestions for future studies. In order to develop curriculum for the purpose of mission, this study analyzed three different needs. It is hoped that this study become a helpful reference to language education centers and missionaries for teaching Korean language as means for mission.
