An Experimental Phonetic Study on Intonation Patterns and perception of Korean Polysemous Final-Endings by Chinese Learners Accurate pronunciation has the greatest importance at the beginning stage of learning Korean but as the level gets higher articulating sentences naturally like a native speaker becomes more important. Thus, accurate pronunciation and natural intonation are important standards when judging leaners' language fluency and communication skills. Lee Ho-yeong (1996, 1999) argued that smooth communication becomes impossible when the speaker is unable to express one's intentions in intonation or the listener does not accurately understand the meaning of the intonation. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to emphasize the importance of intonation education at Korean education fields and suggest its necessity. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to examine the intonation of final endings. The study on pragmatic function of the intonation which materializes the differences of the mood has greater necessity since many studies have already been conducted regarding the grammatical function. Park Ki-yeong (2009) insisted that, when taking into account the characteristic of Korean that the meaning of the mood and aspect is mainly materialized through ending and the materialization of differentiated intonations exist, education is necessary even when the same form of ending materializes different intonations according to meaning for the improvement of the fluency of advanced level of Korean learners. Therefore, when it comes to learning the Korean language, studying the intonation pattern of the final endings which have the same form but various in meaning for smooth communication and teaching the differences in intonation and meaning when Korean language is taught as a foreign language when such endings appear are necessary. This study aims to discover the problems of Korean learners and assist them in learning the right meaning cognition and the natural ending boundary intonation by conducting experiments in two aspects - the articulation and the cognition of the final endings which are the same in form but various in meaning. In short, this study conducted an experimental phonetic research regarding the intonations and cognitions of native Korean speakers and intermediate and advanced levels of Chinese learners that targeted the final endings which are the same in form but various in meaning. The intonation patterns of native Korean speakers and Chinese learners have been compared and analyzed. In addition, this study not only observed the differences in the intonation materialization aspect but also looked at the Chinese learners' way of perceiving intonation and whether they distinguished meanings well or not after they listened to the Koreans' intonation patterns of the final endings that are the same in form but various in meaning. Chapter 1 suggested the necessity, purpose, previous studies, and research problems. Chapter 2 described the theoretical background of Korean intonation such as its concept, function, and system. Chapter 3 stated the content regarding cognition experiment and listening experiment. Chapter 4 identified the cognition results of Chinese learners with regard to the various meanings of the final endings which are in the same form but have diverse meanings and compared the learners' ending boundary intonation pattern with that of native Korean speakers.
