The purpose of the study was to find the mediating effect of the maternal depression in the relationship among the child rearing involvement in multicultural background fathers, the maternal depression, and child social development. I did frequency analysis and mean comparison analysis, correlational analysis and multiple regression analysis. And I analyzed that mediating effect of the maternal depression among three factors.
I investigated 143 multicultural background fathers, mothers, and children who lived in Seoul, Busan, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Chullabuk-do areas. I used the Inventory of Father Involvement for investigating childrearing involvement, the Beck Depression Inventory-Korean version (K-BDI) for investigating maternal depression, and the Social Attribute Checklist (SAC) for investigating child social development.
The results of this study were as follows. First, the sequence of child rearing involvement of multicultural background fathers is "praise and affection", "mother support", "discipline and teaching children", "providing", "time and taking together", "school encouragement". Multicultural background mothers showed slightly high score in the K-BDI. The score of children's sociality is the higher than average score. Second, child rearing involvement scores of multicultural background fathers correlated with scores of child social development. The child rearing involvement scores of multicultural background fathers correlated with scores of multicultural background maternal depression. Child social development scores correlated with scores of multicultural background maternal depression. Third, maternal depression mediated the relationship among the child rearing involvement of multicultural background fathers and child social development.
Maternal depression and child rearing involvement of fathers influence on Children's sociability. Multicultural background mothers may suffer from parenting stress and depression from a strange cultures and the way of life. For enhancing children's social development, parenting stress and depression of multicultural background mother should be reduced. For reducing depression in multicultural background mother, cooperation and support of family, including father's child rearing involvement, will be needed.
