The purpose of this study is to the importance of closing stage in English class at the elementary school. Unlike the other subjects like mathematics, science and social studies, English department doesn't have a study on closing stage of English lesson. And most of the studies have investigated on many activities about introduction and presentation stage, especially ‘PPP' stage. So, this study is designed to analyze both teachers' and learners' perceptions and to investigate on actual conditions of closing stage in elementary English class. This study was also aimed to investigate on which activities are preferred by the learners and how they perceived the effects of closing stage. These will provide effective methods that elementary school teachers can apply to their future planning for closing stage in English class. This study researched the followings: First, actual conditions of closing stage in elementary English lesson and teachers' perceptions of that and second, effects and preference of closing stage activities for learners. A questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews were given to elementary school teachers and six-grade students to conduct the answers to these research questions. The results of this study are as follows: First, although most of the teachers were aware of the importance and necessity of closing stage in lesson, they neglected to plan and proceed due to limited time, lack of references and their will. So closing stage was not a part of the lesson plan anymore. Many teachers, specifically, mentioned that because most of time the last activity was incomplete at the end of the class, they usually didn't have time to wrap up the lesson. Meanwhile, most of the students responded that they need time to summarize the important content of the lesson. Students, Especially, low-level students and those who didn't pay attention to the lesson realized that lesson closure is very worthwhile in that they can review the key expressions they missed out. Second, teachers perceived the meaning and the purpose of the lesson closure as a chance to check the key expressions related to the lesson again and the achievement. So, in the closing stage, a regular activity like a main activity is irrelevant in that it causes the difficulty for the learners. Checking the content of the lesson and the achievement, and let the learners know those are desirable. Also, the students need opportunity to practice the key expressions on the different circumstances and context to apply them in the real world. Third, most teachers orally wrapped up and summarized the lesson only using the speaking function. Results of the questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews showed that many teachers agreed that the way of the lesson closure has to be different in accordance with the language functions. But, they didn't carry out for many reasons. One of the reasons is that because there are not enough references for the lesson closing activity, teachers quickly lose their will to develop lesson closing activities and have difficulty in developing those. Last, the results of the questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews suggest to have the lesson closure in Korean. To prevent the accumulation of learning deficits and to learn the new concept or grammar, the lesson closure in Korean is necessary. And considering recommendations from TEE, it also needs to be applied in lesson closing stage. Students responded that when teachers summarized the key expressions in Korean, they could complement the lack of understanding from the lesson and had a long memory. On the basis of the results of this study, first, teachers should conduct the lesson closure. Not only the teachers perceived the importance and necessity of the lesson closing stage, but also students realized the effect of that. Second, lesson closing stage in elementary English class should be a review in repeated practice of the key expressions rather than extension of the contents. Third, there need to be effective guidelines for the lesson closing stage and develope activities. Fourth, subsequent research is needed to discover the effective ways for the lesson closing in Korean. Fifth, through further research, it is necessary to prove whether or not the existence of lesson closing can actually reflect the improvement of students' achievement. There is a significance that this study states the importance and the worth of the lesson closure, not being ed before. Most of studies on elementary English was focused on the introduction and development stage. So, I hope that this study will be expected to help developing lesson closure in elementary English in the future.
