A Study of Code Switching by Chinese learners of the Korean language Jeong, So Hwi Major in Korean Language Education as a Second Language Graduate School of Education Kyung Hee University Code switching means the act of exchange between more than one language by the same speaker. Such code switching is a strategy used for successful communications in a target language and simultaneously solving communication problems caused by a speakers' incomplete language ability. This study divided the code switching shown in conversations between Chinese advanced and intermediate learners of Korean and Korean native speakers by type and function, and examined its modality. The purpose of this study is to provide data for efficient examination of Chinese advanced and intermediate learners of Korean by their code switching modalities. Preliminary research suggests that the code switching occurs at various levels when Chinese learners of Korean talk with Korean native speakers. We found that Chinese learners of Korean frequently use the code switching in conversations with Korean native speakers due to their recognition of the similarity between the two languages. The interviewees for this study were 40 undergraduates with level 5 and 6 TOPIK scores (20 males and 20 females) at universities located in Seoul. The contents of interview were focused on Korean life and sociocultural issues, and lasted approximately 8 minutes per session. An analysis of the conversations between Chinese advanced and intermediate learners of Korean and Korean native speakers showed that the code switching occurred most frequently in individual words (74.37%), followed by paragraphs (16.25%), then phrases (9.38%). In addition, code switching was divided into strategic and temporary switches, and found that the code switching commonly occurs in clarification, verification and express functions. Chinese intermediate and advanced learners of Korean avoid poor communications due to their incomplete Korean ability by using code switching in order to solve problems in understanding. It was found that as the level of conversation’s theme became more difficult, they spoke by using code switching to Chinese words in order to verify whether the other speakers correctly understood their expressions, if they have little knowledge of the correct vocabulary, or temporally forget key language aspects. Moreover, they also naturally use code switching in familiar conversations where they recognized that Korean native speakers understood their Chinese. This study divided the code switching occurring in conversations between Chinese advanced and intermediate learners of Korean and Korean native speakers by type and function. In this study, Chinese intermediate and advanced learners of Korean had 5th or 6th level TOPIK scores, but it was relatively difficult for them to make high-level conversations because their speaking abilities were not proportional with their TOPIK levels. This study is expected to be used as data for developing educational plans suitable for learners' characteristics, by recognizing the parts of speech and functions in which code switching by Chinese learners frequently occur. Key Words Code Switching, Chinese Korean language learners, Communicative competence, Interlanguage, Korean Education as a Foreign language
