Therefore, number of students who live in foreign countries with parents has increased. At the same time, considerably many students who lived in foreign countries return to south Korea. Many Returning Students after Early-age Overseas Study are supposed to have some difficulties in adapting themselves to domestic school life because of the culture shock caused by what they experienced in other country, such as different culture and language, educational environments, life style, and relationship. The purpose of this study is to identify common problems that Returnees in school adaptation process suffer and factors helping them to adapt themselves to school life. The subjects of this study were 25 returnees, their parents and homeroom teachers. A case study was conducted through interviews. First, If studying abroad was decided and carried out to strengthen international capacity or to have better grades, adjustment will be easy during studying overseas. On the other hand, if studying abroad was decided because of the limitation of domestic schools or the social atmosphere like giving preference to the students who studied abroad, there would be a lot of possibility of failing in adjustment of overseas study. Second, although they did not have difficulties in communication in Korean, they had difficulties in understanding learning contents and terminologies in Korean. They showed difficulty in understanding vocabularies or words in textbooks. Additionally, because of difference in educational methods and courses by nation, they had difficulties in catching up with their classmates and showed fear or avoidance of strange or unfamiliar educational activities. Especially they showed difficulty in such subjects as Korean language and mathematics due to high degree of educational course and suffered from burdens and stress because of prerequisite learning, which was caused by private education. Third, Returnees had difficulties in making deep relations with other students because of delicate difference in way of thinking or language although they didn’t look different from other students. and they also suffered from difficulty in forming relationship with teachers. To those, Korean teachers looked rather authoritative and they said that it was difficult to approach teachers because they were always busy. This affected the relationship with teachers because of difference in way of living between Korea and countries that they had lived in terms of sociocultural aspect. As they lacked of understanding domestic school culture, they complained about the knowledge learning-oriented classroom culture and school system rather than physical activity, this caused the difficulty in forming peer relation. and they were acclimative rather than having resistance or bearing sense of refusal and kept school rules better than other students. When identifying factors help them to be adjusted, the followings were found. First, it should be considered that the education policy help students studying abroad. enough information helps students who are going to study abroad to have right decision on studying abroad and a support system for studying abroad is needed, which helps students decide to study abroad with specific Second, it should be considered that which is the education policy helps returnees. there are no special class or school for returnees in Korea. If the foundation of a typical school for returnees are impossible, it can be desirable to run adapting after school under the control of each local educational board. Individual learning should be paralleled with current learning courses. It is necessary to make returnees have an opportunity to prepare to go to university they want to apply to. Third, it should be considered that the education policy help adjustment of returnees. Most Returnees are confused at the difference of the two cultures. They already experienced the other culture more or ress liberal and they need to make active efforts. We need to give them opportunities to have empathy with friends. homeroom teacher of returnees can help students to be adapted to school life by being considerate for them in classes and guidance of life considering their characteristics. Despite the ordinance on students human rights announced by Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, school rules are needed to help returnees, be faithful to academic activities using their foreign experiences, and adjust well to school life. As factors influencing the adaptation of returnees to school life are complicated as reviewed in this study, multi‐faceted efforts are required to help adaptation of returnees. We can help them grow to be successful Koreans, by paying attention to their problems, trying to understand them, and making some legal devices for returnees.
