This study tried to suggest Mongolians' pronunciation errors objectively by comparing and analyzing acoustically characteristics and errors of Mongolians pronouncing Korean vowels.
Subjects and Method
The subjects were 58 adults(Korean 29, Mogolian 29) dwelling in Jeonju City of Jeonbuk Province. The sustained phonation of 8 Korean vowels /a/ , / i /, / u /, / e /, / ɛ /, / o /, / ɔ /, / ɯ / was analyzed acoustically, leading to F1, F2, F3, F2-F1, F1/F2/F3.
Results and Conclusion
The main results are as follows; F1 of Korean and Mongolian male and F1 of Korean and Mogolian female were statistically significantly different in pronouncing simple vowels. F1 of Korean and Mongolian were also statistically significantly different, F1/e/, F2/u/ being statistically significantly different commonly. /a/, /o/ of male, /a/ of female and /a/, /i/ of total were not different, /a/ not different commonly. /i/, /u/ of male and /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/ of female were statistically significantly different in F2-F1, /i/, /u/ being commonly different and /e/, /o/ different only in female. /o/ and /u/ of Mogolian were smaller than Korean in F1/F2/F3. Mongolian /u/ were larger than /o/ in round vowels, but Korean /o/ were larger than /u/ in round vowels. The vowel space area of Mongolian and Korean were statistically significantly different in female but male.
This study were mainly focused on Korean simple vowels. In the future study of formant of diphthong and consonant are needed. Especially characteristic and errors of Mongolians pronouncing Korean language should be investigated scientifically and consistently to identify similarities and differences of Mongolian and Korean pronouncing vowels and consonants.
