This thesis compares and contrasts cultural phrases in both Chinese and Korean culture that pertain to the twelve zodiac animals. There are two goals to this research, one is to better understand the cultural difference between China and Korea by contrasting phrases about the 12 common zodiac animals and analyzing what they mean to both cultures. The second goal of this research is to help students understand common sayings about the zodiac animals better in another language by organizing the common sayings by animal and meaning in the same chart. The research content and order is shown as below: Chapter One, The Introduction: It explains the necessity, purpose, research method and object of the thesis. Secondly, it explains the importance of learning common sayings. It also introduces prior research on common sayings related to animals. Chapter Two, Theoretical Background: This chapter explains the definition and range of common sayings in both the Korean and Chinese languages. It focuses mostly on the definition and range of common Chinese sayings. Chapter Three, Classified Symbolic Meanings of Twelve Zodiac Animals: It includes a simple introduction of each attribute of each animal and a selective analysis of symbolic meanings of different animals in both Chinese and Korean cultures. It indicates the difference of the symbolic meanings between two countries, contrasting them. Chapter Four, Conclusion of Chapter Three: It contrasts common sayings about different animals where there is a big difference between the meanings in both Korean and Chinese culture. Chapter Five, Chart Combination of Three Types of Common Saying: ones with the same animal and meaning, one with same animal and different meanings and one with different animals and same meaning. Chapter Six, Summary: Contains a summary of this research and explains the purpose of it.
