Recently, great attention has been shown to the question of what is right for email greetings in business English. Therefore, the current study is to provide to Korean EFL students an updated trend in international business circles analyzed in authentic business emails.
Previous researches on email greetings and closings are examined between the work place and an academic environment or comparison between the two companies based in non-English speaking countries. So far, there has been no definitive answer given to this question.
The style of email greeting and closing could be affected by various reasons, such as, a social distance, status, cultural background and personal preferences.
For Korean EFL students, there is not enough research devoted to business English email writing and it would be difficult to excess genuine materials unless they go into the business environment.
This extensive study has three dimensions of views in business emails. Firstly, it is important to see which greeting device is the most widely used regardless of their language backgrounds. Secondly, I look at the differences between the native and non-native's writing email samples and figure out the differences used in greetings and closings. Thirdly, I review the embedded emails to see how many threads usually have for each business transaction and whether it is possible to exempt greetings and closing in business email. Finally, I have studied extensively English business email text books sold in Korea.
It seems appropriate to limit this study to native and non-native as it is difficult judge a cultural difference or individual differences as they appeared in business emails, mainly due to the current multinational companies' hiring in all part of the world.
Email writing could be developed into various forms and styles depending on the field of business, however, it is worthwhile to provide authentic materials to ESP students for their future references of further studies in the field.
The present research intend to provide general knowledge of English business email's structures, focused mainly on email's greeting and closings.
