Genre Analysis on Korean into Spanish Simultaneous Interpretation: With Emphasis on Cases in the Field of Energy and Resources
The aim of the present doctoral dissertation is to analyze the structural and lexical aspects of Korean into Spanish simultaneous interpretation in the field of energy and resources based on the genre analysis methodology of Swales. Observation was carried out on the structural and lexical organization of 18 texts: 6 Source Texts(ST), 6 Target Texts(TT) and 6 Original Texts(OT). ST and TT were compared for move analysis and TT and OT for lexical analysis.
Move analysis of ST and TT indicated that all 12 texts take a four move structure which consists of Introduction, Body, Suggestion and Conclusion. Move stability was over 50% for all the texts, suggesting the moves to be "obligatory." However, when it came to the constituent steps that make up the moves, it was discovered that the steps in ST and TT differed in theme and size. ST dealt with more detail on personal backgrounds while OT dedicated longer time for thanking the participants. ST orators focused on the subject area of energy and resources, programs, numbers and cooperation between Korea and Latin America while OT gave more weight on the presentation of the energy and resources of their respective countries, implying that each group has a different objective. Whereas ST speakers tended to highlight Korea's technological expertise and experience to access the Latin American market, OT speakers showed a tendency of emphasizing the importance of harnessing the region's vast natural resources for development.
Similarities were also found between ST and TT. When proceeding from one move to the next, markers were identified.
The lexical analysis of TT and OT indicated difference in Type-token ratio, average sentence length, high frequency terminologies, specialized terminologies and in the use of numbers and a common pattern of 'proper noun / region.'
Findings show that Korean presenters focus on the technological and experiential aspects while Latin American orators, on the demand existing in their respective countries and their particular situation.
Also, the number of OT speakers surpasses that of TT, resulting in a higher TTR for OT. The average sentence length was shorter in TT because of the simplification and summarizing strategies used by interpreters during simultaneous interpretation.
High frequency terminologies were analyzed for TT and OT. The 50 most frequently used terminologies in both TT and OT were extracted for analysis. High frequency terminologies in TT were generally related to development, investment and growth while in OT, terminologies related to environment, resources, country, region and development.
A total of 19 specialized terminologies were detected in TT and 42 in OT. Specialized terminologies in TT were used in reference to specific technologies, systems, and how to solve specific problem or issue. In OT, Latin American presenters used the specialized terminologies to refer to a particular infrastructure or its size.
OT used numbers to introduce laws and projects of Latin American countries and TT, to show the global status of Korea and Latin America, regarding environment.
'Proper noun / region' was more prominent in TT than OT. This was due to the influence that ST has on TT.
Further study on simultaneous interpretation in different fields based on genre analysis would be useful in identifying the properties and pattern of simultaneous interpretation in a specific field.
