A Contrastive Study on Conjecture Modal Adverbs of Korean and English for English Speaking Learners of Korean
The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the similarities and differences between the Korean language and the English language in conjecture modal adverbs from the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic point of view to provide useful materials for native English speakers learning Korean in the field of Korean education.
Korean modal adverbs perform a very significant role to express the attitude and emotion of people and emotion, and conjecture modal adverbs which are one of the subcategories in modal adverbs have many similar forms in the meaning. In relation to speakers’ attitude and emotion, conjecture modal adverbs present the differences in the meanings in detail, so it is very hard to grasp and distinguish the differences in the meanings. Also, native Korean speakers use conjecture modal adverbs very frequently. Therefore, it is necessary that instructors should need to teach the properties and usages of conjecture modal adverbs in a very concrete and systematic way to Korean learners who don’t have internalized knowledge of the Korean Language.
In terms of the lexical structure, syntactic structure, and pronunciation, the English language is almost dissimilar to the Korean language, and that’s why some English learners, particularly, have more difficulty than other East Asian learners when learning the Korean language. In addition, there is still no contrasting study on conjecture modal adverbs between the Korean language and the English language.
According to the problems about conjecture modal adverbs as mentioned above, this study investigates contrastive analysis between Korean conjecture modal adverbs -ama, amuraedo, eojjeomyeon, seolma, hoksi- with English conjecture adverbs in terms of the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic features.
In Chapter 2, this study reviews some background theories to investigate the similarities and differences between Korean and English conjecture modal adverbs. Also, in this chapter, this study identifies conjecture modal adverbs’ conception and category, and then makes choice of lexical items of conjecture modal adverbs which aims at educational purposes.
Chapter 3 illustrates the similarities and differences between Korean and English conjecture modal adverbs through semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic properties. In the semantic analysis, this study illustrates the correspondence of vocabularies in the meanings of Korean language and English language and the degree of possibility in conjecture modal adverbs. In syntactic analysis, this exams the basic form of the sentence and the position in the sentence of conjecture modal adverbs in Korean language and English language. In the pragmatic features, this chapter examines politeness and speech of act in Korean and English conjecture modal adverbs.
Chapter 4 searches whether ‘ama, amuraedo, eojjeomyeon, seolma, hoksi’ are presented and how they are instructed in the Korean educational field through analysing teaching materials for English speakers learning Korean.
