A study on Selecting and Using Literature for Drama Education as a Part of Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language

The objective of this study is to propose a guideline in selecting and using literature for drama education, which can be utilized in teaching Korean as a foreign language. The value of utilizing literature in teaching Korean as a foreign language will only increase since it will arouse interest of students, raising the demand for education in turn. However, there is a fewer number of cases of teaching-learning and researches related to drama compared to other forms of literature. Discovering plays suitable for teaching Korean has therefore become essential for future education. To meet the increased demand of learners of Korean language for teaching plays, this study has selected the works that cover the Korean War and the postwar period. The Korean War is one of the most significant events in Korean history that should be remembered by Korea, which has remained divided after over 60 years since the Korean War started, and the international community, which participated in the war. Learning about the war will therefore be very helpful for the learners of Korean language in learning about the Korean culture and society. A play is especially interconnected with the era in which is created. It lets a learner learn through a vivid imagination of the events that take place in the play also improves the understanding of the language and culture since a play through realistic language.

The direction of Korean literature education for foreigners is shifting to a learner oriented education, is aiming towards a comprehensive education of language and culture, and is being shown through discovering a diverse set of reading materials. Drama education can teach language comprehensively, can be easily combined with culture education, and can spike a learner’s interest by stimulating one’s imagination. There are several criteria for selecting plays for Korean literature education, including selecting plays of high literary value, selecting works that are highly representative of history of drama, selecting plays that contain Korean cultural elements, selecting the plays with language level suitable for the learner, and selecting the pieces that can be performed by learners themselves. I have combed through 33 plays relating to the Korean War and separated them into nine different categories including ‘works that describe the tragedy of individuals, families, and society because of the war,’ ‘works that portray the pre and postwar realities,’ ‘satirical works on war and pre/post-wartime realities,’ ‘works that deal with separated families and the conflict between generations,’ and ‘works that deal with the perception of unification and division of the nation.’ Afterwards, they were thoroughly examined to exclude the ones that do not fit under the criteria of Korean language education, leaving the final 13 plays. The selected plays can be utilized in Korean language education, more specifically communication skills education, comprehensive education of culture and drama, and Korean drama education. In the future, drama education as a part of Korean language education should employ a more thorough approach, researching on the literary history and the authors. There also needs to be are search on the actual learning through play contents. I hope that a drama education reflecting the diverse interest of learners is actually put into place so that learners of Korean language can enjoy Korean literature practically and energetically.
