This study aims to develop Korean-learning materials focused on elementary social studies in grade 3~6, increasing Korean proficiency for women marriage immigrants to assist chinldren’s subject learning at home.
First, the previous research was performed about needs of women marriage immigrants for assistance of children’s subject learning, subject learning ability of multi-cultural children, and Korean education for women marriage immigrants. That research shows the necessity of development of ‘another’ Korean-learning materials for assistance of children’s subject learning.
Next, needs analysis was performed to determine the needs of women marriage immigrants who have children in elementary school and Korean teacher for multi-cultural family for development of Korean-learning materials. Through needs analysis, two needs of women marriage immigrants became apparent. One is that they want to assist subject learning of their children but have difficulty in understanding the content of subjects and assisting learning of their children with their Korean proficiency. The other is that they are short of ‘vocabulary’ used in the textbooks and ‘background knowledge’ about contents of subject. Therefore it became clear that the contents of this learning materials should include ‘vocabulary and background knowledge’ used in the subject learning and the materials should be comprehensible to women marriage immigrants in their Korean proficiency.
So, through the literature review, ‘Korean for learning’ in the KSL(Korean as a Second Language) curriculum and ‘grammar and expressions’ used in the textbooks of elementary social studies are adopted as contents of the materials. And ‘concept-learning model’ in social studies and ‘content-based instruction’ in second language instruction are applied as the instruction method in the materials. On the basis of these review, the principles of development of ‘Korean-learning materials for assistance of children’s subject learning’ was established and the sample of this materials was made.
The survey of the effectiveness of the materials was carried out using a questionaire targeting women marriage immigrants who have children in elementary school. The result of the survey shows that understanding of concept is more difficult to women marriage immigrants than of vocabulary, but this materials are useful for women marriage immigrants to understand the subject and assist the subject learning of their children.
This study is valuable in the point that the purpose of assisting children’s subject learning by women marriage immigrants is realized as the learning contents, instruction methods and activities of the materials.
