This study is to introduce a blended learning model designed to help secondary students from a multicultural family background improve their Korean proficiency (reading and writing in particular), in order to enter the regular secondary school curriculum.
Blended learning model is a kind of teaching-learning strategy that combines both traditional classes and online classes (such as e-learning), which helps reinforcing the strengths and making up the weaknesses from each classes. The criteria in which this learning model is designed upon are learning objects, learning subjects, students, and contents.
Various types of blended learning models incorporating both online and offline teachings have already been introduced to second language learners and proved effective in previous case studies. However, compared to English (ESL) education, there were only few studies in the KSL educational realm. The KSL blended teaching-learning model suggested in this study is designed for secondary school students who need help with their studies in the regular secondary school curriculum. It integrates reading and writing teaching methods focusing on academic Korean. Writing in Korean is also practiced sufficiently, so that students will be able to conduct the assignments given in regular secondary school courses. The main teaching contents of this model are based on the “Standard Korean for Secondary Students” textbook, published by the National Institute of the Korean Language and used by most of the Korean language centers for multicultural family and some secondary schools.
This model is composed of three types of classes: online learning before school, online learning after school, and offline learning during class. A smart learning application is developed in particular for online learning. Integrated reading and writing teaching method is mainly delivered through this smart application. Students can learn Korean according to their individual learning styles and progress. The contents in this application consist of learning vocabulary, practicing grammars, reading and writing in short sections, and reading and writing in long sections. A teaching plan for a one-hour class is also made as an example to show how offline learning should be performed.
The contribution of this study is to introduce a blended learning model, which is based on KSL standard curriculum and uses integrated reading and writing teaching method, designed to help secondary students with a multicultural background learn Korean and accommodate to the regular secondary school curriculum.
