The purpose of this study is to analyze the macro and micro-structures of Horace Grant Underwood’s “Korean-English Dictionary” (1890) and compare it to Felix Clair Ridel’s 1880 edition of the “Korean-French Dictionary”.
In the first chapter the background, purpose, scope, and methods of the study were discussed. Preceding studies were also reviewed to examine their tendency and limits. Thus it was deemed necessary to analyze the “Korean-English Dictionary” and compare the two aforementioned dictionaries.
In the second chapter, bibliographical information was examined to analyze the macro-structure of the “Korean-English Dictionary”. The number of headword was calculated, including main-headword, sub-headword and homonyms. Lemma arrangement was also reviewed in the preface.
In the third chapter the micro-structure of the “Korean-English Dictionary” was analyzed. Chinese characters along with base forms of headword, word class, explanation of headword, and usage information were examined. Furthermore, characteristics as a Korean-learner’s dictionary were also reviewed.
In the fourth chapter, the macro and micro-structure of the “Korean-English Dictionary” and those of the “Korean-French Dictionary” were compared and contrasted. The lemma arrangement of both books were also reviewed.
In the fifth chapter, final results and conclusions were summarized followed by implications and limits of the study.
Previous studies have focused on analyzing only sections of headword in the “Korean-English Dictionary”. However this study may well be significant in that it analyzed the whole headword of the dictionary by computerizing entries. Furthermore, this study may be useful for studying the structure of bilingual dictionaries in 19th century and opening doors to future studies in the field.

본 연구는 19세기말 이중어사전 중 언더우드의 『한영자뎐』을 분석 대상으로 사전의 구조를 분석하고 『한불자뎐』과의 상관관계를 밝히는 것을 목표로 하여 19세기말 이중어사전 연구의 기초 자료를 마련하고자 하였다.
1장에서는 연구의 필요성과 목적, 연구 대상과 방법을 밝히고 선행 연구를 살펴봄으로써 기존 연구의 흐름과 제한점을 정리하였다. 이를 통하여 『한영자뎐』의 구조를 실증적으로 분석한 연구가 부족하며 『한영자뎐』과 『한불자뎐』의 상관관계를 밝히는 실증적인 연구가 필요함을 밝혔다.
2장에서는 『한영자뎐』의 거시구조 분석을 위하여 서지 정보를 살펴봄으로써 사전의 출간 배경과 기본 정보를 정리하였다. 그리고 사전의 주표제어, 부표제어, 동형어를 고려하여 전체 표제어 수를 산출하였으며 제시된 자모의 배열 순서를 참고하여 표제어의 배열 순서를 살펴보았다.
3장에서는 『한영자뎐』의 미시구조 분석을 위하여 표제어의 한자 정보, 표제어의 기본형, 품사, 뜻풀이, 용법 정보를 살펴보았다. 표제항에 제시된 한자 정보의 기능을 살펴보고, 표제어의 기본형이 제시된 표제항을 추출하여 파악하였다. 그리고 품사 정보가 제시된 표제항을 추출하여 살펴보고 전체 표제어의 품사를 정리하였다. 이를 바탕으로 품사의 범주에 따라 표제어의 뜻풀이를 살펴보고, 표제항에 제시된 용법 정보 중 문어 정보와 존비 표현을 살펴보았다. 『한영자뎐』의 미시구조 분석을 통하여 『한영자뎐』이 한국어 학습 사전으로서 가지는 특징을 정리하였다.
4장에서는 『한영자뎐』과 『한불자뎐』의 상관관계를 검토하기 위하여 두 사전의 거시구조와 미시구조를 비교 및 분석하였다. 거시구조 분석에서는 두 사전의 표제어 선정과 배열에 관하여 상관관계를 분석하였다. 미시구조 분석에서는 두 사전의 한자 정보와 뜻풀이를 대상으로 상관관계를 분석하였다. 그리고 두 사전의 상관관계를 검토한 결과를 정리하였다.
5장에서는 논의의 결과를 요약하고 연구의 의의와 제한점을 정리하였다.
본 연구는 연구방법의 측면에서 『한영자뎐』의 표제항을 전산화한 자료를 바탕으로 사전의 거시구조와 미시구조를 분석하여 선행 연구의 한계점을 보완하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 또한 이와 같은 연구를 통하여 19세기말 외국인에 의해 만들어진 한국어 학습자 사전의 특징을 밝혔다는 데 의미가 있다. 『한영자뎐』과 『한불자뎐』의 거시구조와 미시구조를 분석하여 상관관계를 밝힌 자료는 19세기말 이중어사전 역사 연구의 기초 자료가 될 것이다.
