The purpose of this study is to investigate how definite article ‘the’is shifted in target texts of English-into-Korean translation. English definite article ‘the' is grammatical word whose function is determining NP and the semantic property of the article ‘the’is definiteness. English has articles which explicitly shows definiteness of NP but korean doesn't have articles. Therefore this study focuses on the fact that there must be an effort to maintain equivalence of meaning in translational processes because of the difference between English and Korean.
To achieve the aim of this , first, the is to seek the notion of definiteness. The basic meaning of definiteness is limiting the scope of referring expression and it is language universal property. However, it can be expressed in various ways. In English,‘the NP’is typical of definite description. Second, based on the general idea of definiteness, several highly influential theories of definiteness are reviewed with regard to English definite article ‘the’. It is found that Christophersen's Familiarity theory, Chafe's Identifiability theory and Hawkins's Locatability theory have in common in that they try to define the semantic property of ‘the’as definiteness. Third, definite descriptions in Korean are examined. Unlike English definite description, In Korean, it is hard to find a marker for expressing definiteness. Some expressions can show definiteness of NP such as demonstrative prenoun.
To compare the difference between English and Korean this study uses the parallel corpus. The data of the parallel corpus were collected from the various genres of American publications and their Korean translations with Reiss(2000)'s text typology.
It is shown that about 95% of definite article in the source texts have undergone ellipsis in the corresponding target texts. When ‘the’is translated into Korean, a variety of determiners were used and sometimes there was pragmatic enrichment by translator. It indicates that translators in these target texts have actively intervened in the translation processes since the shifts under discussion are not grammatically determined but selected by the translators.
