As the society moving forwards, the ability to speaking a second
language has become more and more important. Since 20th century, there
has been an increasing amount of foreigners who have started learning
Korean, and within this population, majority are Chinese.
As a result to this increasing demand for dpeople who can speak and
write in Korean, the standard of proficiency of Korean Language has
become higher. Korean is a agglutinative language,most of the grammar
is formed by auxiliary word and suffix, and that makes it naturally
different from Chinese language. These differences are seen mainly in the
form of grammar, word order, auxiliary word and suffix, as well as in
the sense of the sentence and honorific. These major differences have
made it more challenging for Chinese in their study of Korean Language.
In the same time, these differences have also created a stiff obstacle in
the learning process, and have drawn a significant attention when it
comes to the education part. Tutor, who conduct the Korean language
education, have been trying to focus on these issues throughout their
teaching process. However, on the other side, a strong emphasis on that
has caused another problem along the way, which is the lack of
vocabulary seen from the students. Vocabulary plays a vital part in the
learning process as it is the fundamental element of communication, and
sometimes, if people do not have a strong vocabulary, they might not be
able to communicate clearly and effectively even with a solid foundation
in grammar. Therefore, the focus in education which is grammar,
traditionally, should be shifted on to the vocabulary.
In both Chinese and Korean Language, collocation in vocabulary
occurs very often. Though the order of word is different, the way that
message is put crossed is very similar. Due the influence from the native
language, Chinese students tend to make some mistakes on the use of
Verbs simply because the way they use them in Chinese context.
Therefore, there is a need for an emphasis in in-depth understanding of
Collation at the beginning of the learning stage, to ensure that students
are able to make a good and correct use of Collation. As far as it
concerns, there are certain mistakes that are seen on the Collation across
all level of students, from beginning to advanced level, and it is apparent
that there is a lack of focused approach in the education process. In the
vision of shaping a better learning curve, this aims to provide a
better solution to help students with their study in Collation.
This research is carried out at one of the universities in Busan under
the Department of Language, the targeted participants are students who
are at the beginning and intermediate level in their Korean Language
study, as well as students who have already obtained the TOPIK
certificate. The research aims to find out from the native Chinese speaker,
their tendency of correctly/incorrectly using the collation due the
influence of their first language. A questionnaire will be designed in such
a way and will be distributed to the participants. Results will be analysed
to find out the roots of the mistakes they have made, and from there, we
will be able to provide a suggestion as to how to improve the learning
process of Korean Language when it comes the part for Collation.
This thesis is done in the hope of providing a set of information as a
guideline for people who are conducting/receiving the course for Korean
Language study.
