Idiomatic expressions are hard to grasp only by combining meanings of word components. This makes it difficult for language learners from other countries with little intuition about Korean or exposure to Korean to understand idioms. However, the learners must acquire knowledge on the idiomatic expressions since the ultimate goal of language study is smooth communication using the target language.
Focusing on the process that Chinese learners interpret Korean idiomatic expressions, this study aims to apply understanding strategies of Korean idiomatic expressions to teaching methods in order to enhance learning and teaching effects of Korean. To this end, this research discussed this issue as follows.
First, this study reviewed relevant references regarding interpretation of idiomatic expressions and set understanding strategies. By comparing and analyzing idiomatic expressions in Chinese, the mother tongue of the learners, and in Korean, it classified the vocabulary into five categories; ‘Fully Same Patterns of Synonyms’, ‘Partially Same Patterns of Synonyms’, ‘Different Patterns of Synonyms’, ‘Words which exist only in Korean’, and ‘Homonym’.
In addition, a survey was conducted to find Chinese learners’ learning state and needs for idiomatic expressions in Korean.
Then, the study analyzed which understanding strategy was used for Chinese learners to get the Korean idioms through experiment. The understanding strategies, which were set at the initial stage of this study, include context inference, literal interpretation, inference of figurative meaning, reference to Chinese idioms, inference replacing with other words, background knowledge, and others. The understanding strategies were also analyzed in detail by idioms comparison type, learning environment, and Korean competency. The study consequently found key results.
First, there was significant difference in understanding strategies when Chinese learners digest Korean idioms in each idioms comparison type.
Second, the Chinese learners also showed much difference in understanding strategies to interpret Korean idioms by their learning environment.
Third, Korean competency was one of the reasons that Chinese learners used different understanding strategies to learn Korean idioms.
Moreover, the study suggested examples of teaching methods using the understanding strategies to promote and complement the study strategies of idiomatic expressions for learners. It also proposed teaching method cases applying some of the most useful strategies to each learner group reflecting individual feature of learners.
This study provides meaningful insights by suggesting effective understanding strategies that help Chinese learners to study Korean idioms by idioms comparison type, learning environment, and Korean competency.
