The advance of the latest mobile communication technology caused wide s
pread uses of mobile devices such as smart phones, laptops, and smart table
t PCs, etc., enabling us to learn what we want where and when we want.
As an educational tool that could respond to such an educational environme
ntal with flexibility, we focused on mobile applications and suggested a mob
ile application to help the users learn pronunciation of Korean language.
In Chapter 1, the purpose and necessity of the study were presented, alon
g with the methods used in this study. In this regard, we reviewed existing
literatures concerning learning 2nd languages through multi-media and mobil
e learning.
In chapter 2, we examined the theoretical basis for the mobile application,
which are the multi-media based learning and the mobile learning. Also, thr
ough an examination of the constructivism and self-initiated learning which
are learning theories that are close to the mobile learning, we shed light on- 95 -
the theoretical background of the current study.
In chapter 3, as the basic research to develop the mobile application to as
sist learning Korean, we analyzed the existing mobile applications for learni
ng foreign languages and conducted a survey to identify the requirements o
f the learners. As a result, we identified a need for a systematic platform to
teach pronunciation of Korean language among the learners.
In Chapter 4, we designed the Korean pronunciation learning application a
nd its practical realization to elementary level learners of Korean language.
Especially based on the requirements of the users identified in chapter 3, we
focused on the voice recognition to evaluate the pronunciation of the users,
repetitive learning features, and systematic curricula.
Lastly, in chapter 5, we summarized the findings of the study discussed s
o far to draw a conclusion, along with a suggestion for potential complemen
ts to be made.
The implication of this study is that a new teaching method for the pronu
nciation of Korean language was suggested through a mobile application, w
hich has not fully been covered in the field of education in Korea, while the
findings in this study could be used as the basic data to develop future mo
bile applications to teach Korean language.
