An Analysis of 『TV Animated Tale, Joyful World』for Education of Korean Value Culture
for Non-native Korean Learners

In order to learn a foreign language and communicate with its native speakers fluently, mere knowledge of the language is not enough and understanding of the context wherein the language is used is essential. And understanding of such context means that of thoughts, social values, etc. of users of the language. In other words, a fluent communication can only be performed when accompanied by understanding of value culture, i.e., essence of a culture and behavioral criteria of members of a society. As regards culture education conducted in the education of Korean language, education of value culture is insufficient while material culture is still heavy stressed. Many scholars have recently mentioned the importance of ‘value culture’ education but proper teaching materials thereof are hard to be found.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze and review whether 『TV Animated Tale, Joyful World』, considered suitable for education of ‘Korean value culture,’ is appropriate as ‘value culture’ materials. 『TV Animated Tale, Joyful World』 consists of 10 books and is extracted from episodes of an animation program that had run for 11 years on KBS 2TV. The following is a brief summary of this study.
In Chapter I, first of all, culture education-related preceding studies in the field of Korean language education are reviewed concerning the direction, content and method of culture education respectively. Also, the criteria of selecting 『TV Animated Tale, Joyful World』, analyzed in this study, and the method of analyzing it are suggested.
In Chapter II, scholars' concept of ‘culture’ from the perspective of foreign language education studies and concept and category of ‘culture’ used in the field of Korean language education studies are looked into. Also, the concept and content of ‘value culture,’ discussed in the field of Korean language education, and the need for ‘value culture’ education are examined, providing a theoretical background for this study.
In Chapter III, firstly, the reasons for selecting 『TV Animated Tale, Joyful World』 as value culture materials are presented and Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory and Choi Joon-Shik's writing, the basis of ground for the analytical framework, are looked into. Secondly, an analytical framework of value culture is worked out and the items of each category are laid out. And, based on such analytical framework, the 10-book 『TV Animated Tale, Joyful World』 is analyzed and value culture items for each category are provided in the form of tables. Lastly, from analysis of the result of this study, 『TV Animated Tale, Joyful World』 is shown to have high value as teaching materials of Korean value culture, and also the methods of using and supplementing them are proposed.
