최근 몇 년간 외국인을 위한 한국어 교육은 눈부신 성장을 하였다. 한국의 국제적 위상이 높아지고 해외교포 2~3세가 증가함에 따라 국내에서는 물론이고 국외에서도 한국어 교육에 대한 관심이 증대되고 있다. 특히 한류 열풍을 타고 중국이나 일본뿐만 아니라 동남아시아에서 이 분야에 많은 인력을 필요로 하고 있다. 한국어 교육에 대한 관심은 국내외적으로 크게 늘어났으며, 이는 한국어 교육 규모에서도 쉽게 알 수 있다. 세계 주요 대학에 개설된 한국어학과 또는 한국어 강좌의 수는 지속적으로 늘고 있으며, 해외교포를 대상으로 하는 한글학교도 계속 늘고 있다. 국내의 주요 대학 중 상당수가 한국어 교육기관을 운영하고 있고, 단기과정의 한국어교사 양성과정과 외국인을 위한 한국어 교육 석사과정을 설립하였으며, 몇몇 대학의 학부에서도 한국어 교육과 관련된 학과를 신설하기도 하였다.
언어 학습에 있어 학습 환경 또한 중요한 영향을 미치는데 제 2언어 환경에서 언어를 학습할 경우 학습자는 목표 언어를 접 할 수 있는 기회가 많기 때문에 다양한 문장을 구사할 수 있지만, 외국어 환경에서는 학습자가 사용하게 되는 언어의 사용도 한정되어 있으며, 한국어에 노출되지 않는 여러 가지 환경적 요인 때문에 사용자가 의사소통하는 데 있어 많은 어려움이 있다.
한국어 교육은 많은 관심과 문제점을 안은 체 관심의 대상이 되고 있지만 준비가 안 된 상태에서 봇물처럼 터진 한국어 교육의 수요를 충족시키지 못하는 부분이 현 사태이다. 한국어 교육이 새롭게 도약하기 위해서는 현재의 시점에서 전반적인 실태와 문제점을 되 짚어보고 그 해결책을 모색하는 것이 중요하다. 현재 지속적으로 해외 한국어 교육기관이 계속 늘어나고 해외 파견 한국어 교사가 계속 증가하는 점을 감안할 때 학습 환경의 차이가 미치는 영향에 대해 연구하고 국내 환경에서의 한국어 학습 전략과 차별된 학습 전략을 찾아내어 해외 한국어 교육현장에 적용할 수 있도록 하는 부분이 충족된다면 한국어 교육의 발전에 큰 도움이 될 것이다. 물론 여기서 다루는 내용들이 모든 한국어 교육 분야를 포괄한다고는 할 수 없겠으나 하나의 발전적인 방안 제시라는 측면에서 그 의의를 찾고자 한다.

In recent years, the Korean language education for foreigners has made a remarkable development. As the global positioning of Korea got higher and due to the increased number of the 2nd-3rd generation overseas Koreans, interest in the Korean language education is increasing in Korea as well as in foreign countries. Specially, due to the 'Korean Wave,' a lot of manpower is needed in this field not just in China or Japan, but in Southeast Asia as well. Interest in Korean language education has increased domestically and internationally, and this is evident in the size of Korean language education. A number of Korean language department or lecture offered in major universities in the world is increasing continuously, and Korean language school for overseas Koreans continues to increase as well. Among the nation's major universities, a fair number is operating the Korean language institute, established short training courses for Korean language teachers and a master's course for Korean education for foreigners, and faculty of several universities founded a department related to the Korean language education.
In terms of studying language, the learning environment makes a significant influence. Whereas the learners who are studying language in the 2nd language environment can have a command of the language because they have a lot of opportunities to hear and speak the target language, but when learners are studying the target language in a foreign language environment, use of the language is limited and they have difficulties in communicating because of various environmental factors.
The Korean language education is becoming an object of attention while attracting great interest and problematic matters, but the current situation is that the demand for Korean language education that poured out in an ill-prepared situation is not fulfilled. For Korean language education to make a fresh leap, it is important to look back on the actual condition in general and problematic matters at this point and to come up with solutions. Considering that the number of overseas Korean language Institute and foreign dispatch of Korean language teachers are continuously increasing, researching on the effect of differences in the learning environment and finding learning strategies of Korean language and differentiated learning strategy in domestic environment to apply in the overseas Korean language education field is satisfied, it would be a great help in educating the Korean language. Contents discussed in this study do not include every Korean language education field, of course, but it is significant in terms of suggesting one developmental method.
