A Study on Reading Material Using Korean Traditional Fairy Tales
-Focused on overseas Korean children living in Hong Kong-

The aim of this research is to propose ways to develop the reading ability of overseas children who are studying Korean as a second language. As these children have limited time to read Korean texts, this study was conducted to find ways to incorporate reading material to strengthen their reading ability. The study was conducted using children who have a Korean background of either overseas multi-cultural families or second generation overseas Korean families in Hong Kong. The children were encouraged to develop their comprehension skills through reading interesting Korean texts to prevent the children from losing interest based on the content.

Firstly, the most appropriate age to strengthen the overseas Korean children's reading abilities are between the ages of seven to eleven. A survey was conducted and distributed to the children's parents to identify factors that affect the child's learning. The results of the questionnaire indicated that the more effort the child put into improving their Korean, the more they hoped to strengthen their reading and writing ability.

Considering that these children are more exposed to Korean culture compared to foreigners and they are more meaning-orientated when learning, the use of fairy tales seemed fitting for children to read as an interesting text as it reduces their psychological burden while improves their reading abilities. Before selecting a suitable text for the children to read, their reading capability was reviewed. It was investigated that interesting and age appropriate content with simple vocabulary and writing style was most preferred. Korean traditional fairy tales make an adequate and useful reading text to develop the children's comprehension skills in addition to increase their knowledge of Korean culture.

Therefore, based on the responses by the children' parents, a list of Korean traditional fairy tales and an outline of instructions was created. To liaise between school and home and for the participants to actively incorporate fairy tales into their reading, a pre-reading step, reading step and post-reading step was designed. During the pre-reading step, the teacher activated the children's schema by assigning them to read the fairy tale. During the reading step, students read the fairy tales with the help of their parents. During the post-reading step, the teacher checked the student's knowledge of the text. The text "Siblings Who Became the Sun and the Moon" was used in the study as it was the most preferred text based on the responses of the questionnaire by parents.

The significance of this research is the use of traditional Korean fairy tales to enhance the reading capabilities of overseas Korean children living in Hong Kong. Using fairy tales as a foundation, specific text or literature genre reading assignments can be assigned depending on the learner's capability to improve their Korean.

In the limited environment that overseas Korean children are able to learn Korean, it is hoped that there is an increased development of functional reading and writing teaching material for learners to improve their literary language. For the overseas children to increase their knowledge of Korean culture and provoke the accurate and quality use of the Korean language, consistent effort should be put to create a solid groundwork of Korean education for these children.
