This study aims to provide basic data by seeking political, practical ways to keep healthy, happy families; This study is based on Korean men’s motivations of international marriage and real experiences of marital adjustment processes.
Therefore, the main issues raised in this study are as follows: "What kinds of motivation Korean men have at the initial point of marriage?", "How much Korean husbands in multicultural family feel adjustable of their initial marriage life", "What is the main task required for Korean husbands' marital adjustment?"
This study selected research participants as 6 Korean men with international marriage who understand the objective of research, and whose marriage period is from minimally over 1 year. For data collection, the individual interview methods are used. The recorded materials are used as data for analyzing the marital adjustment experiences. The findings of this study are as follows.
First, the motivations of marriage are the urge of their family-of-origin and the difficulties in domestic marriage because of the Korean men's old age. The participants' marriage proceeds very quickly once they decide to marry. Also, the informal social network, without being expanded, is passed down to their children generation because of the absence of parents before the marriage; the absence of in-laws after the marriage.
Second, after international marriage, Korean men would be a helper for their spouses who have different languages and life styles. Also, they would be an cultural broker between the his family-in-law and his spouse. Korean men helped their spouses specifically to go to hospitals, banks and to get Korean citizenship, to register at the multicultural center and so forth.
Besides, the Korean husbands put in a great deal of effort to make their spouses' visit to their country, affording to high costs. The participants have burden with their old age while raising a child and are deeply concerned for their children's linguistic developmental delay and discriminations due to their exotic appearances.
This study shows that the multicultural families are needed the great efforts of Korean husbands to make adjustable family. But Korean men’s old age and late family formation would be an important variable in maintenance of healthy family. It implies that the needs of diversely practical intervention programs and strategies centering on the outcomes.

본 연구는 다문화가족 한국남성들의 국제결혼 동기와 결혼적응과정에 대한 실제경험을 탐색하여 사회복지의 정책적, 실천적인 기초자료로 제공하는데 목적이 있다.
이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 다문화가족 한국남성 6명을 대상으로 심층면담을 통한 질적 연구를 하였으며, 연구문제는 다음과 같이 설정하였다. 첫째, 다문화가족 한국남성의 결혼 동기는 어떠한가? 둘째, 다문화가족 한국남성의 결혼적응 과정은 어떠한가? 셋째, 다문화가족 한국남성의 결혼적응을 위한 사회복지 실천함의는 무엇인가?
연구문제의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 참여자들은 가족과 지인들의 권유와 소개로 결심 후 속성으로 결혼하였다. 결혼 후 적응과정은 한국남성이 가정의 주체자로 가정의 전반적인 일들을 아내에게 가르쳐주며 자립하기 까지 기다려 주었다. 또한 자신의 원가족과 이웃 사이에서 문화의 매개자로서 소통하고 있으며, 외국인 사위로서 국제적인 상황에 대한 공부를 해야 하며, 처가방문·초청 등으로 높은 비용을 감당하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
참여자들은 자신의 높은 연령에 대한 부담감과 자녀들의 언어발달 지연, 이국적인 외모로 인한 차별을 가장 많이 우려하고 있었다.
참여자들의 아내들은 출산 후 한국어 수업을 중단하였으며, 사회적 관계에서 한국어방문선생님을 아내의 소통의 매개체로서 언어교육 외에도 이웃이 되어주는 인간적인 면을 가장 선호하였다.
참여자들의 대부분은 만혼으로 가족형성시기가 늦으며 부부간 연령차가 크게 나타났다. 가정의 경제적 준비가 미비한 경우 한국남성의 사망에 따른 불안전 요소가 이들의 생활 전반을 위태롭게 할 수도 있다. 이를 바탕으로 다문화가족의 결혼적응을 돕기 위한 실천함의는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 다문화가족 한국남성의 생애주기교육과 퇴직 후에도 경제활동을 할 수 있는 방안이 필요하다.
둘째, 다문화가족 결혼이민자들이 출산 후 언어교육을 하는 시간 동안 아이돌보미 자원봉사자가 필요하다.
셋째, 어린이집, 유치원, 학교에서 다문화 교육 실시와 다문화교사의 확대방안을 실시해야 한다.
넷째, 지역사회의 중심인물들(반장, 통장, 자원봉사자 등)에게 다문화 교육을 실시하여 소통할 수 있는 방안을 마련한다.
다섯째, 다문화가족의 역량에 맞는 적합한 프로그램의 개발과 실질적인 서비스를 제공한다.
여섯째, 다문화가족의 바람직한 가장들을 멘토로 양성해 사회적 인적 자원으로 활용할 수 있는 방안을 마련한다.
일곱째, 다문화가족 결혼이민자에게 자녀교육 및 직업기술교육을 지속적으로 받을 수 있는 환경을 제공 한다.
여덟째, 다문화가족 결혼이민자의 한국어 방문선생님의 서비스기간을 확대해야 한다.
지역사회의 건전한 성장을 위해서는 다문화사회에 대한 적응을 소수의 다문화가족에게만 일임하는 것이 아니라 지역의 다수가 다문화에 대한 교육을 받음으로써 차이와 다름에 대해 이해하는 것이 선행되어야 한다. 또한 지역사회의 구성원들이 앞장서서 편견보다는 그들의 다양성을 인정하며 조화를 이루어 같이 공존할 수 있는 방법을 모색해야 한다.
