This study focused on the developmental characteristics of bilingual receptive and expressive vocabulary in 5~6-year-old multicultural preschool children. 60 preschool children, 20 monolingual Korean speaking children, 20 Korean-Chinese bilingual children, and 20 Korean-Vietnamese bilingual children participated in this study. The examination was conducted man to man in daycare centers, multicultural family support centers, and individual family's home in Daegu. Their overall language ability was examined with standardized language test, and REVT was used in translated form of Chinese and Vietnamese to investigate their characteristics of language development. The test result of receptive and expressive vocabulary in monolingual Korean children showed higher scores than that of Korean-Chinese bilingual children, followed by that of Korean-Vietnamese bilingual children. Furthermore, in receptive and expressive vocabulary, both bilingual children showed higher scores in Korean than in their home language. Korean-Chinese bilingual children showed little differences between receptive and expressive vocabulary in Chinese, while they showed noticeable differences between receptive and expressive vocabulary in Korean. On the other hand, Korean-Vietnamese bilingual children showed no significant differences between receptive and expressive vocabulary in Vietnamese, while they showed remarkable differences in Korean. Finally, significantly higher percentage of correct responses of receptive and expressive Korean vocabulary was observed in adjectives rather than in verbs or nouns in both Korean-Chinese and Korean-Vietnam bilingual children. |
