A Study on Discourse Markers of Korean Language
for Korean Language Learners

This study set out to analyze the morphological, syntactic, and pragmatic information of each discourse marker focused on the functions of some discourse markers ‘자’, ‘참’, and ‘있잖아 and contemplate their applications to Korean education.
As for methodology, the study analyzed the examples of each discourse marker in movie and drama scripts and Sejong spoken corpora.
Chapter 2 examined the concepts, characteristics, functions and types of discourse markers.
Chapter 3 looked into the morphological, syntactic, and pragmatic characteristics of the discourse marker ‘자’ and considered its discourse functions including "request for action," "concentration of attention," and "conversion of situation."
Chapter 4 examined the morphological, syntactic, and pragmatic characteristics of the discourse marker ‘있잖아’ and considered its discourse functions including "initiation of topic," "concentration of attention," "emphasis" and "earning time."
Chapter 5 reviewed the morphological, syntactic, and pragmatic characteristics of the discourse marker ‘참’ and examined its discourse functions including "showing a realization," "concentration of attention"(initiation of topic and conversion of topic), and "expression of emotions"(expression of a negative emotion and exhibition of exclamation).
Chapter 6 analyzed their examples in movie and drama scripts and Sejong spoken corpora, investigated the situations and vocabulary usually associated with them, and considered their application plans in Korean education.
The study is significant in that it provided the morphological, syntactic, and pragmatic of each discourse marker and searched for their application plans in Korean education by investigating the discourse markers of similar functions.
