현재 한국 사회는 급속도로 다문화․다인종 사회로 발전하고 있다. 이전보다 다양한 민족과 인종, 이념을 배경으로 하는 사람들이 우리 사회의 구성원으로 자리잡게 되었으며 이들의 비율도 점점 높아지고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 우리나라 정치, 사회, 경제, 교육 등 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 다문화 시대에 관한 논의가 진행되고 있으며, 앞으로도 계속될 전망은 의심할 여지가 없다.
특히 다문화교육은 그 어떤 정책들보다도 관심이 크다고 할 수 있다. 국가기관과 더불어 사회단체들은 여러 가지 형태의 다문화교육들을 진행하고 있는데 대부분의 다문화교육은 소수집단을 대상으로 하는 사회적응 교육이 주를 이루고 있다. 이 프로그램도 지속적이지 못하고 일회적이고 이벤트성이 짙은 행사가 대부분이다. 지금까지의 교육은 다문화교육이 추구하는 배려, 이해, 평등, 문화적 다양성 등의 존중을 확보하지 못하고 있기 때문에 오히려 너와 나의 다름을 분명하게 확인하고 구별 짓는 행위의 원인이 될 수 있다. 다문화교육의 구별 짓기는 역차별을 불러일으키며 오히려 경계성을 통한 사회갈등을 유발하는 원인으로 이어질 가능성이 크다. 따라서 이해와 배려를 바탕으로 하는 다문화사회, 평화로운 공존을 실현하는 다문화사회가 될 수 있도록 모든 사회 구성원 내면의 변화가 필요하다. 나와 다른 사람의 문화와 가치를 인정하고 수용하는 태도를 기르며 다문화사회의 필요한 역량을 갖춘 인재가 될 수 있도록 교육방법을 모색하여야 한다.
이것이 바로 다문화교육을 위한 국어과 교육이 맡아야 할 임무이다. 국어교육은 모어가 한국어가 아닌 가정의 자녀들을 지원해야 할 뿐만 아니라 모든 학습자들을 대상으로 초등교육에서 중등교육에 이르기까지 장기적 과정을 통해 다문화사회를 자연스럽게 이해하고, 바르게 성찰하고 비판할 줄 아는 다문화사회에서의 소통 능력을 키워주는 방향이어야 한다.
본 연구는 이 부분에 대하여 문제의식을 가지고 일반학생을 교육의 대상으로 삼아 이들이 다문화사회의 구성원으로서 내면의 변화를 이끌어 낼 수 있는 방법을 ‘문학’으로 보았다. 문학은 인간의 삶을 소재로 하는 인지적, 정의적, 심미적인 요소가 복합적으로 결합된 하나의 예술작품으로 볼 수 있다. 문학은 일상생활에서 사용하는 언어와 같은 것이지만, 실재하지 않는 것을 생각하는 과정에서 작가의 개성과 창의성, 상상력 등이 요구된다. 문학은 인간의 삶을 소재로 하여 여러 가치가 복합적으로 반영된 예술이므로, 문학을 통해 인간의 다양한 삶의 방식이 형상화됨을 확인할 수 있다. 문학속의 다양한 삶을 만나는 과정을 통해 독자는 이 사회의 문제가 무엇이며, 그 문제에 대한 비판의식을 갖게 한다.
이렇게 인간 삶의 본질 문제를 다루는 문학교육은 다문화교육과 동시에 사회과 교육도 다룰 수 있는 근거를 갖는다. 통합에 관한 연구는 빠른 속도로 변화하는 다문화사회 속에 문제에 대한 일부 문제들을 해결해 주기도 한다. 교육활동에서 일어나고 있는 것을 보다 큰 맥락에서 탐색한다는 것은 현재 내가 어느 곳에 위치해 있는지, 앞으로 나아갈 방향은 어디인지 제시할 수 있다. 바로 이러한 점에서 통합교육은 마치 큰 그림을 보듯 전체를 바라보는 시야를 넓혀주는 역할을 하는 것이다.
본 연구는 문학작품을 활용한 다문화수업을 국어-사회교과의 통합교육적인 관점에서 접근하고 있다. 문학교과의 범교과적인 특성은 타 교과와의 통합교육의 가능성을 열어주는 출발점이 될 것이며, 특히 다문화교육을 준비하고 있는 교사들에게는 이 통합교육적인 방법이 새로운 시도가 될 것이다.

The Korea of today is developing rapidly into multicultural · multiracial society. More and more people who comes from different ethnic, ideology and have different cultural backgrounds became social members in this society than before. Furthermore, the discussions about multicultural society are in progress throughout all fields, such as economy, politics, culture and education, and there is no doubt they will continue in the future.
Especially, multicultural education is becoming more important than other fields. The national institution and social organization proceed multicultural education programs and most of this programs are mainly the education for social adjustment. But these are just one-off event not constant programs. Until now, the education hardens the differences between me and others because it has no regard about consideration for others, awareness of equality and respect for culture diversity, which are the virtues that multicultural education tries to pursue. The act of distinguishing in the multicultural education can cause reverse discrimination and because of that, the social conflicts are more likely to occur. Therefore, the change from the inside of social members is needed to make the multicultural society which fulfills peaceful coexistence based on understanding of and consideration for each other. The society should accept others’ values and cultures, and try to seek the education system to nurture the talent who is suitable for multicultural society.
This is a task the Korean language education has to take for multicultural education. The Korean language education should not only support the children of family which uses another language as a mother tongue, but should also suggest the directions of promoting communication skills in multicultural society by long-term process through primary and secondary education.
In this study, with having a critical mind on this part and considering the average students as a target for the education, ‘Literature’ became a method to lead the changes from the inside of social members. Literature is a work of art which cognitive, affective and aesthetic elements are combined complexly. Literature is similar to a language that used in daily life, but it requires the writer’s individuality and creativity over the process of imagining the unreality. The various ways of living can embody through literature because it is an art reflects several values, based on the human life. The readers can realize the problems of society around them and have critical mind about the problems in the process of facing the various lives in literature.
Thus, the literature education deals with the matters of substance in human life has basis for the social studies education as well as multicultural education. The study on the integration solves some problems in multicultural society which is changing at a fast pace. To explore occurrences which is happening at educational activities in a larger context make the people realize where they are standing and where is the right directions they have to go. In this sense, integrated education plays a role to broaden our mental vision.
This study approached to multicultural education from the integrated education standpoint of Korean language and social studies education. The cross curricular characteristics of literature will be a starting point which opens the possibility to integrate with other subject, and this integrated education method can be a new approach for the would-be teachers who prepare the multicultural education, especially.
