This study investigated the political awareness of high school students in Suncheon and Jinju in Yeongnam and Honam, analyzed what change had happened to the present situation compared with that of 2002 and aims to present the cause of changes of political awareness and the formulation solution of effective political awareness of high school students.
The study conducted a survey for high school students residing in Suncheon and Jinju and the result are as follows:
First, interest in society class, politics and current affairs and school environment of class meeting and its democratic management showed a significant positive correlation with political awareness. That means that students having more interest in society class and politics have higher political awareness. Moreover, it found that if student union and class meeting are operated in more democratic way, the political awareness of students is higher. Therefore, society teacher should induce students to interest in politics or current topics by various teaching materials in class. Schools or teachers need to progress the autonomy capability of students by democratic student union and class management.
Second, the political awareness by gender was shown that male students have higher participation and political awareness than female students. That is resulted from the social recognition that as yet women show reservation about political participation. Therefore, the institutional strategy to improve the social recognition about women’s political participation and to raise the participation rate of women’s participation to politics should be provided. The political awareness by track showed that students in science track have higher national and regional consciousness, law-abiding spirit and sense of public order, and students in humanities track have higher political trust awareness and political awareness. That is resulted from the fact that compared to students in science track, students in humanities choose more society and politics related classes, so they may have generally higher political awareness.
Third, the effect of parents’ occupations, mother’s academic ability and region toward the political awareness of students were not significant, but father’s academic ability and the level of family economics influenced the formulation of political awareness of students. The higher father’s academic ability, the higher student’s law-abiding spirit, sense of public order and political awareness. On the contrary, the students in low income showed higher law-abiding spirit, sense of public order and political awareness. That means the difference of family background influenced the political awareness of students. Overall, high school students in more democratic school environment have higher political awareness, and by gender, track and social?economic background they have positive political awareness in national and regional consciousness, political participation awareness, law-abiding spirit and sense of public order, but they have negative political awareness in political trust awareness.
