There has been an increase in the population mobility due to various and complex factors such as the impact of the global immigration, the increase of the international exchange, the phenomenon of low birth rate and aging, the imbalance of supply and demand of marriage, etc. There has been an increase in the number of married female immigrants in Korea along with the trend. The married female immigrants have been playing an important role in the Korean society as giving birth and raising a child in the future through becoming an entity of a household at the same time of immigration. Thus, to enable them to adapt and live adequately in Korea is a very important task from the social perspective as well as the personal perspective. In recognizing the importance of such task, there have continuously been the researches to understand the living conditions of the married female immigrants and the studies on the development and operation of the adaptation education for them. However, the previous studies have been interested insufficiently in how the adaptation educations for the married female immigrants have been conducted in the field and how well they were received by the married female immigrants; thus, they could not properly examine the effectiveness of the adaption educations. Based on this awareness of the problem, this study will examine the adaptation education program from the comprehensive point of view and re-explore as to direction of the adaptation education as reviewing the perception and conflicts and difficulties of the adaptation education through the voices of the married female immigrants who were the participants of the adaptation education program.
Therefore, the study questions have been set as follows. First, what are the difficulties experienced by the married female immigrants in the process of the adaptation education? Second, what perception do the married female immigrants have as to the appropriateness of the contents of the education?
This study aimed to determine the conflicts and difficulties that the married female immigrants have been experiencing in the adaptation education program using the qualitative research methods in order to explore the study questions. It wrote the interview guide through the learning outcomes and pre-interview, the analysis of the previous studies, the observation for participation, etc. and conducted the in-depth interview based on these. Thus, the findings of the study are as follows.
First, the difficulties as to the process of participation for the education that the married female immigrants have been experiencing can be divided into the difficulty of securing a time to participate in the education, the difficulty due to the way of operation of the educational institute, the difficulty of participating in the education due to the negative perception of Koreans and the difficulty as to human relations.
Second, it examined what perception the married female immigrants had as to the appropriateness of the contents of the education. The immigrants had a positive response to the preparatory education for Korean proficiency test and the contents of promoting emotional stability. On the other hand, they had a negative response to the fact that there has been an insufficient consideration of education difficulty for the education subjects, and also they had a negative view on that it was hard to apply to real life with the contents that did not match the reality. There have been some contents that were specifically requested by the immigrants since they had not been sufficiently treated as an actual educational content. These were the Korean social economical system, the cultural uniqueness of Korea, children’s education, employment, school admission, etc. Meanwhile, the problem of the difference of perception as to the identity of the minority groups being treated as an educational content, which have never been however mentioned in the previous studies, has became salient.
This study has proposed as follows based on these findings. First, it is necessary to have a precise analysis on the requirements and evaluation of the education program. Second, it is imperative to provide a customized education through sophisticated measures to address various demands. Third, it is necessary to discuss on the education beyond the adaptation education for minority groups. Fourth, it is necessary to train teachers in order to change the perception and attitude of the multi-cultural teachers. Fifth, it is necessary to have an education to change the perception of Koreans.
