Because South Korea is rapidly shifting into a multicultural and multiracial society, multicultural families and their children have significantly increased every year.
The government has been focusing on Korean language education mainly to women who have come to Korea for international marriage. This education has been a very important issue to society.
As children from multicultural families go to school, they are faced with difficulties in their school lives, such as not easily adjusting to the environment and not being able to get a good grade. Because the Korean language can be a direct influence to the children’s school lives, the government has realized the desperate need for assistance to these children. However, even though there have been many proposals to improve their assistance, majority of these proposals have not given shape to their plans.
Diversified enterprises have been carried out to support children from multicultural families based on the 2006 multicultural families-supporting policy by a private organization and the Ministry of Education. However, there is a lack of professionalism in the field teachers, a lack of a systematic structure for Korean education, and a lack of learning customized by age, regional group, and level.
This research has designed to seek a desirable and reasonable Korean educational program for children from multicultural families attending lower grade elementary school.
By analyzing the school lives and educational level of children from multicultural families, this research emphasizes children’s Korean education based on ‘Speaking and Writing’ and ‘Pronunciation and Spelling.’ Also, it argues that education programs should be planned for the children to learn language and culture through a reading education program; to understand Korea and their mother country; and to develop self-identity and broaden their minds.
