This study aimed at presenting picture materials and an education plan based on conjunctive endings that appear in beginning-level Korean grammar textbooks for married female immigrants and verifying the effectiveness of lessons using the picture materials.
In the study, the following two research questions were addressed with regard to the development of picture materials, education plan using picture materials, and the verification of the effectiveness of picture materials.
First, what are the criteria for the development of picture materials effective for explaining grammar?
Second, compared with lessons in which grammar is presented through defining explanations using the target language without utilizing picture materials, are lessons in which grammar is explained using picture materials more effective?
The researcher examined the requirements for the development and utilization of picture materials by theoretically inquiring into the first research question. In accordance with the requirement, the researcher created parts of conjunctive endings, presented in beginning-level grammar textbook for married female immigrants, in picture materials. The picture materials were developed in the ollowing three divided sections: situational context picture materials which can be used in the introduction stage; schematized picture materials showing imageability of meanings which can be used in the presentation stage; and picture materials expressing exemplary sentences and picture cards for the practice and utilization of the sentences.
The researcher sought the answer to the second research question through an experiment. The subjects of the experiment consisted of 18 married female immigrants at the beginning level from the Ansan Multicultural Family Support Center in Gyeonggi Province. The subjects were divided into control and experimental groups and then received lessons about the conjunctive endings '-(으)ㄴ데/는데’, ‘-고’, and '-아서/어서.' The results showed that compared with the control group taught the conjunctive endings through defining explanations, the experimental group taught the conjunctive endings through lessons using picture materials showed better achievement.
This study, conducted to help students understand grammar more effectively with picture materials, proved through experiments that picture materials are effective in teaching grammar. It is hoped that further research will be conducted on the various, concrete picture materials and education plans for the a variety of grammatical items for effective grammar education.
