Recognizing a need for education for emotional expression in the elementary stage of Korean education, this study set out to explore effective educational plans to help elementary-level learners improve their emotional expression skills.
For that purpose, the investigator divided emotional expressions into positive and negative ones and set the basic- and sub-categories of emotions. Positive emotional expressions include "joy" and "liking," while negative ones include "sadness," "disliking," "anger," "fear," and "shame." The subareas of basic emotions were limited to such emotional adjectives as "merry," "happy," and "glad," such emotional verbs as "want" and "get angry," and emotional idioms as "be pleased with" and "get sad about."
Those emotional words were extracted from the vocabulary lists proposed by four college teaching materials used in actual Korean classes based on the elementary-level vocabulary lists of Test of Proficiency in Korean. They were then used to analyze the patterns of emotional expression education.
The analysis results show that most of elementary-level Korean teaching materials did not provide separate education for emotional expressions and merely presented them as the auxiliary means of grammar explanation. In addition, they provided no explanations about synonymous and antonymous relations and vocabulary combination relations and offered only a shortage of examples that took situations and contexts into account, which suggests that learners will have difficulties with recognizing subtle differences of meanings in conversation situations.
The analysis results of vocabulary lists indicate that there was no match between the vocabulary lists of Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) and those of Korean teaching materials and that there were many differences in the difficulty level among the teaching materials.
The study arranged the vocabulary lists of elementary-level emotional expressions according to hierarchy and proposed content and methods for efficient emotional expression education. It also emphasized content that considered examples according to situations and contexts and meaning differences of vocabulary based on the task-combined PPP instructional model, making concrete proposals for the education of elementary-level emotional expressions in Korean.
