This study analyzed discourse markers in the texts of theses for a degree aiming to lay a foundation for the Korean learners with academic purposes to learn how to write and read theses. For this, this study analyzed 100 theses for a degree written by Korean native speakers in Korean education and looked over the contents of introduction, body, and conclusion first. Then analyzed discourse markers of each constituent accordingly. With the results, this study extracted discourse markers and made lists of 'discourse markers according to the flow of argument', 'discourse markers according to the research methods' and 'discourse markers according to the way of developing contents'.
'Discourse markers according to the flow of argument' is discourse markers that represent typical constituents of the contents according to the flow of argument in 'introduction-body-conclusion' in order. This study focused on both introduction and conclusion which have similar aspects of constituents in most theses.
Next, this study analyzed 'discourse markers according to the research methods' in the body of theses that utilize more than one research method and comprise multiple chapters. Analyzing the research methods of 100 theses, there are 4 central types of 'literature review researchㆍsurvey researchㆍtext analysis researchㆍexperimental research' in Korean education. This study extracted discourse markers according to each research method. In the body of theses, the contents proceed as a unit with 'presenting a subtopic-intensifying the subtopic-closing the subtopic'. On the way, 'discourse markers according to the way of developing contents' were extracted.
The results revealed that the discourse markers reflecting the features of theses in the field of Korean education which put a heavy weight on the research based on the empirical data.
The significance of this study is that it analyzed actual texts of theses to find out distinguishing linguistic phenomena in theses of a specific field of Korean education. This can be used as a basic resource for the Korean learners with academic purposes to understand and write theses.
