This investigates the possibility of using SNS for writing education, based on the observation that SNS is in wide use for our daily life and it helps build up mutual trust between the Korean students and foreign instructors residing in Korea. It begins with locating the educational efficiency of using SNS. And it reviews the teaching methodology in writing instruction that employs the potential merits of the SNS. Further it tries to present solutions to the unilateral instruction and to the problems arising from vocabulary memorization and repetition drills. It is hoped that this helps our effort to come up with easier and more interesting interactive writing education.
Chapter One discusses the necessity and the purpose of this study. It will also cover the research methodology for this and the literature survey in the area.
Chapter Two deals with the educational need for writing instruction employing the SNS. This chapter delves into the properties and theories of dialogue oriented writing education, which will serve as the theoretical foundation for the actual text analysis in Chapter Three and Chapter Four. The significance of using SNS in writing instruction is also discussed in this chapter to see its characteristics and educational effect on teaching writing.
Chapter Three shows the actual text analyses based on the theoretical background laid out in the previous chapter. We have analyzed the Korean and Foreign learners Facebook texts and classified them into three groups according to the different characteristics.
Chapter Four studies the methodology of writing instruction by using the Facebook. It presents the instructional objectives and content as well as learning strategies and suggests the instruction plans for each subcategory.
The major goal of all this study is to lay out an easier and friendlier way to learning to write in Korean. Students find it difficult to speak and hear Korean but they find that putting their ideas in Korean is a tremendous challenge almost beyond their capacity due to various diacritic marks, the honorific system and phonologically confusable words distinct in meanings.
Further, it takes more strokes than English to write in Korean, which is further aggravated by the difficulty in acquiring the right grammar for spacing. Facebook is a very convenient educational medium that presents easy access to orthographical regulations found in Korean.
First of all, the absence of special or time limitation is the greatest merit of SNS in that the students can use it anytime and anywhere for their learning purpose and they can get the feedback they need even in the absence of the instructor.
Further they can get feedback from their Korean friends around on top of that from the instructor, which shows that the Facebook, as an open space for learning, has great influence on Korean writing education.
