This study aims to examine the characteristics of semantic distinctions in the synonyms of psychological adjectives in Korean vocabulary education to present the useful materials of vocabulary education by analyzing the semantic systems of the synonyms of psychological adjectives.
To learn the semantic relations between vocabularies performs an essential role in learning language successfully. Above all things, the most difficult part in both teachers and learners is to study synonyms. In particular, it is difficult to distinguish the meanings of synonyms only with the definition of dictionaries in view of Korean in which language expressions which can represent human psychology are various.
To achieve the study goal, this study sets up psychological adjectives that represent human psychology as study subjects and presents semantic distinction methods in regard to the synonyms of psychological adjectives for intermediate and advanced Korean language learners. Since intermediate and advanced Korean language learners are in a period of increasing vocabulary size in comparison with beginning learners and expanding established vocabularies in quantitative and qualitative aspects, the education of synonyms is more keenly required.
Therefore, this study selected psychological adjective in accordance with the levels of intermediate and advanced Korean language learners and made a vocabulary list of synonyms to present semantic distinctions according to syntactic relations instead of relying on the definition or examples of dictionaries. As a way of semantic distinction, the Sejong Korean corpus was used, and examples were presented by the analysis of uninflected words and predicates which can be combined with predicates, adnominal forms, and adverbial forms of psychological adjectives. In addition, it revealed the discretion of each psychological adjective by identifying that some psychological adjectives are not replaced with other adjectives.
This study indicates that learners will cultivate more fluent Korean language skills and Korean language teachers can teach learners synonyms more effectively through the listing of knowledge about synonyms.
