The purpose of this study is to find educational measures by making a list of elementary onomatopoeic words to be used for the students at the elementary level of Korean language to understand the words’ characteristics As the onomatopoeic words well show the characteristic of Korean language, they are expected to be lubricant to learning Korean for the learners at elementary level of Korean can use Korean by emphasizing its characteristics.
First, this study conducts a literature review on the preceding studies of surveys that demonstrated that the contradiction between initial-level learners’ learning desire for onomatopoeic words and their learning opportunities come from the lower awareness of the importance of onomatopoeic words in sentences. Then the study redefines the theoretical characteristic of predicative onomatopoeic words in sentences. In this regard, it is important for Korean teachers to put the focus on the role of nucleus in productivity or air relationship of onomatopoeic words’ combination form rather than the linguistic characteristic of each word. As a initial-level learner, the onomatopoeic words that are directly related to linguistic intuition should not be avoided or put behind by thinking that those words would have social background or difficulties. And also, the teachers should not think that those words are in the lower level of other words so that they can only be taught when needed as subordinate measure. If the Korean language is educated by using phonological, morphological, and syntactic characteristic of onomatopoeic words, it will not only volumize the educational content but also contribute to the fluency and authenticity of the learners’ Korean language. Learning the language alone cannot be the education of the language itself. Because the social background is embedded in a language, learning onomatopoeic words for foreign learners will add depth to their use of Korean language through communing with Korean society, which will offer motives of study and enhance learning effect that goes beyond the education of Korean language. Along with the theoretical study of Korean onomatopoeic words, the examination of the reflection of initial-level educational status of onomatopoeic words on existing textbooks and TOPIK questions shows that although it is showing an improvement, it is still remaining at a remarkably lower level. Therefore, as a way of finding the measures for this reason, this study set an educational measure and made a list of onomatopoeic words through meta-analysis before making an educational measure. Based on this list, this study suggests an educational measure for initial-level learners, separately for communication and division of the list. I expect this to be used to fulfill the needs of the learners and to be a great tool for the teachers to expand the educational opportunity and volumize the use of Korean language with onomatopoeic words. Further studies could fulfill some of the frustrations of this study that used meta-analysis for analyzing the materials regarding the necessity in the purpose of educational measures and not able to make the list for each condition and purpose.
