Recently interest in Korean for academic purposes is increasing with
overseas students visiting Korea. As a matter of fact, however, there is
something yet to learn on foreign students majoring in science and engineering.
In this great need this research started. Accordingly the purpose of this research
is to offer physics centered reading material development plan for the foreign
students to improve college scholastic ability and to show its real examples with
the unit model suggested.
This study started as follows.
Firstly, the purpose and the subject of the reading materials are specified
prior to suggesting a development program. The reading materials in this
research are to activate the physics-related schemas which were pre-formed by
their native language and to improve their command of Korean by giving
reading materials on physics before they enter the colleges. Hence the targets of
the developed reading materials are adult learners with the schemas through the
secondary education in their native languages as wellas overseas students
learning the Korean language ability course rank-4.
Secondly, I made up and propose a syllabus designed for reading materials - the physics-related thematic teaching modelis picked among content based
approaches. The whole fields of physics are classified into 6 groups -
measurement and vector, dynamics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, light and
wave, modernphysics. According to each group, topics and words were chosen,
contents were organized and arranged to the curriculum, and then the complete
syllabus was presented.
Thirdly, I presented the method on the development of text, the main part of
the reading material. Categorized into 2 types - one with the adaptation of
school text books and the other with the adaptation of many things related to
physics such as news, internet information, magazines and so forth. The
criterion and the principle were specified and the process was observed in
advance of text adaptation.
Fourthly, how to compose each unit of reading materials was illustrated. The
principle of composition of units using KWL reading strategy waspresented to
activate the learner's schema.According to each step of ‘Pre-reading, Whilereading,
After-reading’, the process of unit composition was described and then
actual unit model was introduced.
Lastly, the developed unit model test aimed at intermediate learners was
conducted to ensure validity. However unfortunately it was impossible to
conductthe testin classes with overseas students preparing only forcollege
entrancetests.
As an untrodden field,this research is a meaningful experience developing
reading materials for foreign students majoring in science and engineering.I
hope that many other educational studies on the Korean language for them
should be in progress in the future.
