In foreign language study, correct pronunciation is key in order to communicate with native speakers. Some learners who study Korean as a foreign language find that pronunciation is not improved, despite much time and effort spent learning grammar and increasing vocabulary. In addition, pronunciation taught in a beginners’ class has been fossilized and even if a student takes an advanced course, pronunciation is still not improved.
Current language classes are composed of integrated education which includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Pronunciation tends to be treated with less importance than the others. Therefore, it needs to develop a new Korean pronunciation textbook which can be used as a supplementary to the integrated education.
The purpose of this study is to present a plan for developing Korean pronunciation teaching materials for beginners in the integrated educational field. In order to develop a pronunciation textbook, this analyzes 3 pronunciation textbooks and 5 integrated textbooks for content, format, curriculum, learner’s level and the different teaching methods. Then, based on analysis of those textbooks, phonological system and rules are chosen, as well as the construction of content and format in every chapter. The newly designed pronunciation textbook, based on the above analysis, is carried out in an integrated class and hence the degree of appropriateness and satisfaction is evaluated by learners and instructors.
This study focuses on proposing a Korean pronunciation textbook in order to increase the efficiency of pronunciation education. Adding this pronunciation textbook will be a great help for foreign beginners who want to learn the Korean language.
