This study is about apology speech acts extracted from Korean apology expressions for Korean learners to learn in Korean speaking education. This is for Korean learners to learn not only the apology expressions as courtesy greetings but a variety of appropriate apology expressions according to various discourse styles as well. Thus, this study reviews and analyzes Korean native speakers' apology speech acts on the materials which represent various discourse styles. Based on the analyzed results, this study extracts and proposes appropriate apology expressions for Korean learners to learn in Korean speaking education.
Previous studies on apology speech acts in Korean education use Discourse Completion Test(DCT) to analyze Korean native speakers' apology speech acts. However, The DCT is artificially set by the researcher, and the expressions lack of reality. In addition, they analyzes and presents Korean native speakers' apology speech acts, yet they do not explain how differently apology expressions are used according to the situation or the speaker.
Therefore, this study analyzes speeches, press releases, and drama scripts which contain authentic situations with various apology speech acts and measures the numbers of apology speech acts used in each discourse style. Furthermore, based on the numbers of apology speech acts in the authentic materials, this study selects and presents appropriate apology expressions for Korean learners to learn with respect to their frequency, discourse style, and additional steps.
Chapter II grasps the concept of apology speech acts based on the theories of speech acts, and presents the types of apology speech acts after sorting those in previous studies. The types are direct and indirect ones. To extract appropriate apology expressions for various discourse situations, the discourse types of Martin Joos(1967) are applied to this study.
Chapter Ⅲ presents the selection criteria of the materials to analyze and analyzes the discourse from the selected materials. The main apology speech acts in the oratorical discourse and deliberative discourse are conditional and commissive ones. That's because damaged national reliability and public images and faces need recovering. The oratorical discourses and deliberative discourses are used in formal situations where a speaker with a higher social status speaks to multiple hearers. In the consultative discourses, casual discourses, and intimate discourses, the apology speech acts of plain apologies, reasons and offers of repair have high frequency. That's because the speakers use strategies to recover their damaged relationship with the hearers. In the consultative discourses, casual discourses, and intimate discourses, the speakers and the hearers have one on one private discourses, and they have the same social status.
Chapter Ⅳ extracts appropriate apology expressions for each discourse style based on the analyzed materials. To extract them, the frequency of the apology speech acts is extracted from the materials first. That is because if the frequency the apology speech acts is high in the materials used by Korean native speakers, Korean learners also have more chances to use them. Secondly, this chapter reviews the characteristics of the five discourse styles in the extracted apology expressions and sorts them according to the discourse style to present apology expressions to Korean learners appropriately in each discourse situation. Thirdly, additional apology expressions are added to those of low frequency due to the limit of the analyzed materials to make a final list of appropriate apology expressions for Korean learners.
This study proposes appropriate apology expressions should be presented to Korean learners to use them appropriately in various discourse situations. In order to use authentic apology expressions, it is necessary for Korean learners to learn the apology expressions used by Korean native speakers. The Korean apology expressions should be presented in the speaking education in accordance with each discourse style, and the learners can speak them naturally and accordingly. There have not been a study analyzing apology speech acts according to the discourse style. The significance of this study lies on its presentation of the Korean apology expressions with respect to the discourse style.
