Recently, the number of multicultural families in our society is showing drastic growth due to the increase of international marriages. Accordingly, the number of children in multi-cultural families is showing an rapid increase, and the task of assisting the children to play positive roles as members in our society has become one of the important roles of our society. However, most assistance programs conducted for children in multicultural families emphasized on linguistic and academic aspects. It is appropriate to provide assistance programs for studies since it is the area that requires most urgent needs. However, adolescent period should be the time when individuals are engaged in academic studies while searching for their career and gain various relevant experiences. Despite the fact that findings presented how the second biggest concern of children in multicultural families was related to their career following their concern about studies, the domestic education system does not place importance on career education. The problem here is that families of children from multicultural families have difficulties supplementing the areas that schools cannot satisfy for the area related to career education. Generally, middle school students receive the most counseling from their parents regarding their career, but in case of multi-cultural families, the language barriers cause hindrance in the parent-child communication. The communicative disconnection causes influence on attachment relations as teenagers in multi-cultural families face hardships in attachment relations with parents compared to others in general families. These problems affect the self-concept and efficiency in teenagers from multi cultural families. Therefore, teenagers in multi-cultural families face more difficulties searching for and deciding on their career compared to teenagers in general families. Therefore, this research will compare the parent-child communication types, degree of attachment, and self-efficiency recognized by middle school students in both multi-cultural and general families and observe the influence of differences on career barrier awareness and decision making level of middle school students.
In terms of the research subjects, 474 middle school students in multi-cultural and general families enrolled in 10 middle schools located in the Seoul․Gyeonggi districts were selected after sampling. Amongst these subjects, data of 204 students (102 students in multi-cultural families, 102 students in general families) were applied for analysis. For the questionnaire, parent-child communicative scale, parent attachment scale, self-efficiency scale, carrier barrier scale, and career decision level scale were applied, and the surveyed data was analyzed through the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science).
Different stages were applied for the analytical method. First, the frequency and percentage were calculated in order to identify the general characteristics of the research subjects. Second, t-test was conducted to identify whether there are differences in the level of parent-child communication, parent attachment, self-efficiency, career barrier awareness, and career decision. Third, Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted to identify the correlation in cultural forms of families with the level of parent-child communication, parent attachment, self-efficiency, career barrier awareness, and career decision. Fourth, multiple regression analysis was conducted in the stepwise method in order to identify the influence of parent-child communication, parent attachment, and self-efficiency caused on the level of career barrier awareness and decision according to the cultural form of the families.
The following are the research results. First, as a result of analyzing the influence of parent-child communication, parent attachment, and self-efficiency on the career barrier awareness of middle school students in multi-cultural families, it was displayed that the open communication and attachment to father and self-efficiency had an influence on the students. The reason for this result is due to the fact that fathers often become involved in initial child care because mothers who are foreigners displays passive parenting attitudes due to their insufficient language abilities and cultural differences. As time passes, the mothers' linguistic abilities become increase and the level of adaptation rises. However, the parenting form becomes fixed and middle school students in multi-cultural families were displayed as forming more relations with their fathers.
Second, as a result of analyzing the influence of parent-child communication, parent attachment, and self-efficiency recognized by middle school students in multi-cultural families on their career decision, it was displayed that the dysfunctional communication of fathers causes influence. This also showed relevance with fathers instead of mothers, but the degree of influence was displayed as inadequate compared to the career barrier awareness. Moreover, compared to how open communication of fathers cause influence on the career barrier awareness, it was displayed that fathers' dysfunctional communication affected the career decision level. This signifies how the positive and open communication with fathers cause certain influence in reducing the level of fear about career, but does not provide assistance in selecting their career.
Fourth, it was displayed that self-efficiency amongst parent-child communication, parent attachment, and self-efficiency caused influence in the career decision level of middle school students in general families. However, the degree of influence is low compared to the influence caused by self-efficiency on career barrier awareness. Therefore, it can be identified that self-confidence has a positive influence in overcoming fear, but does not provide great assistance for volitional aspect of career selection.
Based on these results, this research conducted a discussion about the career barrier awareness and career decision level of middle school students in both multi-cultural and general families and suggested implications regarding career counseling and career education as well as follow-up researches.
