M.A. Thesis A Study of Request Expressions in Korean Language Textbooks for Female Marriage-immigrants - Comparing with television drama scenarios- Jeong, Soon-Young Department of Korean Language Education As a Second Language, Graduate School, Yeungnam University (Supervised by Professor Suh, Jong-Hak) Abstract The Purpose of this study is to determine the usage aspect of request speech acts, especially on the politeness of Korean request speech acts, appeared on Korean textbooks for female marriage-immigrant. The request speech acts of Korean native speakers and the ones appears on Korean textbooks for female marriage-immigrants have been compared and analyzed. On the basis of CCSARP strategy format, by analyzing 11 precedent research meta-analysis and 9 TV drama scenarios major 2 criteria has been prepared to analyze Korean request speech acts. The first one is request strategy and expressions appeared on request speech acts, and another one is variables of request situation. And in detail, variables of request situation is divided into the nature of request situation(whether rights or request), the social distance(whether distance or intimate), and the social dimension of relative power(whether S<H, S=H or S>H). On the basis of the two criteria, request speech acts in Korean textbooks for female marriage-immigrant were analyzed. Textbook analysis consequence was compared to the consequence of TV drama scenarios after analyzing entire Korean textbook analysis and levels analysis. Request strategies appeared on request speech acts of TV drama scenarios are used in order of direct instructions(60.7%), hint(11.4%), using suggestory formulas(9.9%) and indirect instructions(8.8%). In addition, request strategies of direct category(72.0%) were used twice as much as request strategies of indirect category(28.0%). In variables of request situation appeared on TV drama scenarios, speakers are using variety request strategies when the request itself is uncomfortable not only to hearer but also to speaker, when the social distance between speaker and hearer is not intimate, when the hearer has greater social power. In addition, speakers are tend to use more request strategies of indirect category. All of above mentioned three variables affect the choice of request strategies, however, in TV drama scenarios, the social distance is more affective than the social dimension of relative power. Request strategies appeared on request speech acts of Korean textbooks for female marriage immigrants are also used in order of direct instructions(41.1%), hint(16.8%), using suggestory formulas(15.4%) and indirect instructions(10.5%). Request strategies in the textbooks are, however, well balanced in direct and indirect categories. Furthermore, there are frequently used strategies, listed above, in the textbooks, however, the usage frequencies is not focused too much on one strategy as it shows in TV drama scenarios. The analysis consequences of variables of request situation shows the same consequences as TV drama scenarios. When choosing the request strategies, the nature of request situation and the social dimension of relative power affect greater than the social distance. As the result of the analyzing request speech acts on TV drama scenarios and textbooks, there were few differences in request strategy usage frequencies and usage aspect of request expression. But they are well reflecting actual Koreans' request speech acts aspect. First of all, however, the nature of request situation and the social dimension of speaker and hearer in the textbooks is focused to much on and it needs various settings on situations and conversation participants since most of the conversations happen in unformal situations. Secondly, comparing the request expression of the textbooks and TV drama scenarios, few limited expressions were used. And regardless of the levels, same expressions were repeated. Thus, some other variable request expressions are needed. Thirdly, request strategies appeared on the textbooks are focused on 4 strategies(direct instructions, hint, using suggestory formulas and indirect instructions) among 11 suggested strategies by this study, thus, more variety strategies are required. Fourthly, the textbooks need to reflect the expressions of when speakers say the same requests, they can change their strategies according to social distance. Fifthly, non-verbal aspects that we did not discussed on this study, also need to be considered for successful education of request speech acts. This study have two significant meanings. This study, first of all, has set up the basis materials to realize request speech acts education in the field of Korean education for female marriage-immigrant. Secondly, This study has emphasized the necessities of request strategies and expressions in Korean education. This study has gone through the textbooks as its first step to find the educational measures of korean request speech acts. Since studying the textbooks, however, is not studying entire lecture, there are limits of not going through the Korean education field. The study only have examined locutionary head act among the request speech acts and limiting the request situation variables as three also could be the limit.
