This study explores Korean '-eoss-' that is one of past tenses and has been a controversial topic in some studies. In order to analyse the translation pattern, first, it develops the concept of tense and aspect in both Korean and English. Second, it questions how Korean '-eoss-' can be interpreted in terms of tense and whether there is equivalent tense and aspect for '-eoss-' in English translations. Third, it explores what accordingly causes such a result if there is not equivalence.
Chapter two analyses tense and aspect of Korean and English respectively. The finding is that Korean '-eoss-' means primarily past in tense and secondarily perfect in aspect. In the translated text of English, tense and aspect means differently.
Based on the concept of tense and aspect, chapter three deals with how '-eoss-' is translated into English in terms of tense and aspect. The texts are selected from various genres and comparatively analysed. '-eoss-' is extracted from Korean source texts by genre and then they are classified by tense and aspect. As a result of comparative analysis between English translations and Korean source texts, the translation goes different ways according to the relation between the aspect of verbs and an adverb of time and the direction of translation.
As for the aspect of verbs, verbs showing difference in tense between Korean and English mostly belong to the complete verbs or the non-conclusive verb and they all have result-sustainability. As the complete verbs and non-conclusive verb of Korean shows 'result-sustainability‘, Korean sentences carries ’-eoss-‘ and English ones present or perfect', drawing a hypothesis of what the two languages shows discordance of tense in translation.
It is studied that in English, an adverb of time is involved in tense and plays an important role in the analysis of aspect while in Korean, its role is proved sporadic. However, this study shows that not only an adverb of time functions in reducing ambiguity in contexts but also words on time relation in Korean plays a role of supplement in the expression of tense and aspect. Equivalence or nonequivalence of tense and aspect can be seen according to linguistic factors(verbs and adverbs) and nonlinguistic ones(translational direction).
The prefinal ending '-eoss-' has been controversial among scholars. Therefore this study started from the expectation that as it is translated, the translational pattern would be varied. It can give an answer to the hypothesis that Korean '-eoss-' has an effect on tense and translation in accordance to the aspect of verbs, an adverb of time, and translational direction.
In conclusion, an accurate, natural translation is required to take into account the relations among the quality of
'-eoss-', aspect, an adverb of time, and translational direction in line with clear understanding about the two languages and contexts, without clinging to the source text.
