This study is aimed at French language speakers and its purpose is to identify how they perceive and speak an affricate in the Korean language through perception and production tests from the perspective of acoustic phonetics. In this regard, this study conducted experimental phonetic research, and the research results include the following.
First, concerning the perception test, the study aimed to review how the subjects distinguish sound signals through the AX task and the ABX task. According to the results, there was a high error rate between lax consonants and aspiration in an anlaut affricate, whereas the error rate between tense consonants and aspiration appeared very high in affricate in the middle of a word.
Second, the study measured the VOT, the F0 of the following vowels, and the closure duration time in the production test so that a comparison was possible with the pronunciation of L1 speakers of the Korean language to see if there were any differences.
Regarding VOT, there was a significant difference in comparison with Korean language speakers between lax consonants and aspiration in terms of an anlaut affricate. Meanwhile, for an affricate in the middle of a word, there was a significant difference in tense consonants. With regard to anlaut lax consonants, consonant reduction was observed in 58.3% of the subjects, whereas with regard to lax consonants in the middle of a word it was observed in 16.7% of the subjects.
Concerning F0 and closure duration time, they were produced without any significant phonetic distinction between three-waysple confrontations.
Lastly, in the assessment of intelligibility aimed at L1 speakers of the Korean language, the percentage of correct answers regarding an anlaut affricate was 47.78%, whereas the percentage of correct answers concerning an affricate in the middle of a word was 51.85%.
In triple confrontations, the intelligibility of aspiration was the highest, whereas it was shown to be the lowest in tense consonants.
