The aim of this is to examine the cognitive characteristic of the Korean spatial dimension terms bodying forth an object based on the spatial concept on the assumption that there might be an exquisite system in human beings' cognition of the spatial dimension and the use of terms expressing the spatial dimension.
In addition, this is going to clarify by what spatial concept not only physical objects but also time and abstract objects are analogized to be recognized according as the concept of the spatial dimension is used even in expressing time and abstract objects.
This study explains the Korean spatial dimension terms on the basis of the 'Dimensional Assignment Grammar' by Lang(1989), Lang et al.(1991) who placed the concept of the spatial dimension and expression on object-centeredness and axes-bases on the assumption that the dimension of the concept of the spatial dimension and expression is designated according to the axis of an object.
The Korean spatial dimension terms are restricted in combination. It's impossible to combine 'Neobi' with 'Gulggi' and 'Doogge' and 'Gulggi.'
In addition, in case 'Nopi' and 'Gipi' are combined, the direction of 'Gipi' cannot be vertical; in case 'Nopi' and 'Giri' are combined, the direction of 'Giri' cannot be vertical. It's possible for 'Gulggi' to combine the maximum one vocabulary.
'Giri', 'Neobi', 'Doogge' and 'Gulggi' are influenced by salience, and 'Nopi' and 'Gipi' have nothing to do with salience.
'Giri' is used for all objects of more than one dimension, and 'Neobi' and 'Nopi' are available to the objects of more than 2 dimensions. 'Gipi', 'Doogge', 'Gulggi' are used for only the three dimensional objects.
The expressions of spatial dimension created by time and abstract terms are asymmetric, and show transition phenomena. Such transition phenomena occur only in a marked form.
