This study was intended to emphasize the importance of language education as the subject of teaching and learning Korean language, and to make a proposal for efficient teaching and learning for the actual use in practice of Korean Language education.
For this purpose, in the Chapter 1, the importance of collocation education is mentioned, and existing researches of collocation, particularly failure analysis of foregoing studies were reviewed. The significance and objective of this study as well as the methodology of study was stated.
In Chapter 2, the previous studies concerning the concepts, characteristics and type of collocation was reviewed. And the review of Korean collocation education by the lexical approach was conducted. Accordingly, as the concepts and categories of collocation were set up. And a theoretical foundation was formulated.
In Chapter 3, the experiment was carried out to provide objective data supporting this study. As for the experimental method, first, the survey for teachers was conducted and analyzed after making the survey tool. The contents of the survey were composed of the Korean language teachers' perception on collocation education and collocation teaching methods in actual classroom, and others. Second, the lists of collocation were selected for experiment and the collocation test was constructed as an experimental tool. And then, the test was given to intermediate learners. The frequent types of errors and the causes were analyzed with result of test. The result was statistically presented by the errors according to the learner’s level and according to language types, and according to question items.
In Chapter 4, a collocation teaching model utilizing the lexical approach was proposed to get away from the traditional teaching model based on experimental results from Chapter 3. The Actual collocation education utilizing the lexical approach based on the teaching model was also present.
In conclusion, the final result was summarized and the conclusion was stated based on the result of experiment. In addition, the limitations of this study and recommendation and improvement were presented.
The educational value of the collocation could not be overlooked. Vocabulary building through collocation learning would improve the ability using the language of four functions in integration and influence positively on learners' communication skill. Therefore, this study would be effectively helpful if grammar and vocabulary are considered separated in dichotomous perspective view and the teaching and learning utilizing lexical approach are applied in classes.
