A study on Korean education utilizing folk tales

Abstract

For arriving at 'cultivation of smooth communicative competence', the purpose of Korean education, correctly, not only fulfillment of linguistic functions but also understanding of Korean society and culture have to be achieved properly. Recently, the opinion that combined education of language and culture by education utilizing Korean literary works becomes possible is proposed and lots of studies for that are suggested. But the object of almost studies is modern literacy works and for the selection of learners, it's limited to learners whose standard is more than intermediate level.
The purpose of this is to seek Korean education utilizing 'folk tales', among Korean classical literature, under the object of foreign leaners studying Korean in Korea. There are also critical opinions that Korean classical literature is not proper in the practical aspect of Korean education. But foreign learners cannot neglect classical novels reflected by Korean traditional thought, values, etc. the mostly if Korean values, thought, world view, etc. among various cultural factors of Korea, are important that they are living in Korea. Also, among Korean classical literature, the characteristics of 'folk tales' have great significance and utility for Korean education.
In this , concept and characteristics of 'folk tales' were firstly revealed and based on those characteristics, significance and utility for Korean education were suggested.
The characteristics of ‘folk tales’ are basically concise and simple plot of story, forms of repetition and opposition, international universal subject, Koreans' traditional way of thinking, emotional whole, etc, as a literature of Oral Transmission. Based on those characteristics, significance and utility of Korean education can induce learners' interest easily, make them understand easier than other Korean literature and help them to understand Korean society and culture by making them experience Korean classical society and culture indirectly.
Through those 'folk tales', it's possible to educate language and culture synthetically for learners. In the context reflected by concrete and usual Korean languages well, natural Korean studying and synthesized functional education linguistically are possible because of the characteristics of oral transmitted literature. In addition, they can experience naturally Korean society and culture indirectly as Koreans' educational way of thinking, values, emotion, etc. are melted in languages so the education of Korean society and culture is possible. Furthermore, through the international universal subject reflected in ‘folk tales’, foreign learners can feel that it is not different from their own values and emotion and can be provided by an opportunity to assimilate with Korean society.
Finally, methods and realities of Korean education utilizing ‘folk tales’ were suggested. Prior to seeking of concrete education, cultural models of Ronald A. Carter and Michael N. Long were examined. Their cultural models provide methods and reasons for teaching literary works in foreign languages' education and they can be applied to Korean education as they are. Also, they accept the viewpoint that cultural ability, grammar knowledge, literature ability, etc. are necessary, in current situation that importance of communicational competence is emphasized for Korean education.
The cultural models of Carter and Long are saying firstly, the cultural model, secondly, the language model and thirdly, the personal growth model. And in this , those three models can be applied gradually and hierarchically according to the standard of learners. Those three models discussed that education is conducted synthetically but teaching and studying can be achieved by changing model's weight suitable for the standard of learners.
Therefore, for learners in elementary level, an improvement of linguistic ability was attempted through the studying focusing on simple vocabulary, expression and sentence structures by laying stress on the language model. For learners in intermediate level, an improvement of ability understanding Korean society and culture was their purpose by laying stress on the cultural model. For learners in advanced level, individual experiences accumulated by enjoying Korean literary works could be connected to personal growth, by laying stress on the personal growth model.
Based on the discussion until now, a way of education utilizing 'folk tales' was introduced and practical examples for each standard of learners were suggested under the material of「Kongji and Padji」, an universal folk tales all Koreans know.
