This study was to examine the difference and effect between the attachment to mother and the adaptation on school life of children in multicultural family which means that these children would have multicultural characteristics and to find the importance of the attachment to mother in school life; finally, it would provide actual, detailed, and basic data for children in multicultual family to adapt to school life.
The research problems for this study are as following.
1. how is multicultural characteristic of children in multicultural family?
2. Is there difference in children's attachment according to multicultural characteristics?
3. Is there difference in adaptation to school life according to multicultural characteristics?
4. How the attachment to mother which is recognized by children in multicultural family affects the adaptation to school life?
The subjects of this study were third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade of elementary school students in Seoul through the random sampling. The survey was conducted for 4weeks from march 29, 2010 to April 20. Total 131 questionaires were collected and some of irrelevant questionaires were excluded; finally, 119 questionaires were used in study analysis.
The reliability of each scale was verified for data analysis and frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test in post-hoc, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used to examine the difference and effect of each research problems.
The major findings of this study are as following.
First, multicultual characteristics of these children were that most home of these children's mother was Japan and the majority of mothers had lived in Korea more than 10 years. Also, the mothers' Korean ability was higher than intermediate class. In terms of language comprehension, most children had no difficulty having conversation with mother and 83.4 percent of respondents showed that they had no difference in recognizing appearance. In Korean ability, most respondents had positive thinking about their Korea abilities.
Second, as a result of examining the difference of attachment to mother according to multicultural characteristics, there was significant according to mother's home and staying period in Korea, mother's Korean ability and language comprehension level between mother and child, and children's Korean ability and recognition of appearance. Overall, the recognition of attachment to mother was higher in groups that mother's home was China and staying period in Korea was less than 5years or 5~10years compared with other groups. Also, the better Korean ability of mother and child, the lesser difficulty in language comprehension, and the lesser recognition of appearance, the higher attachment to mother children had.
Third, as a result of examining the difference of adaptation to school life according to multicultural characteristics, there was significant according to the home, Korean ability, and language comprehension of mother, but there was no significant according to staying period of mother. the adaptation to school life was better as mother's home was china, Korean ability of mother and child was good, there was no difficulty in language comprehension between child and mother, and children recognized that their appearance is not different to others.
Fourth, as a result of analysing correlation of children's attachment to mother and adaption to school life, there was significant in all factors; so, the higher attachment to mother, the better adaptation to school life such as teacher, friend, learning activity, observing rule, and school exercise they showed.
Fifth, as a result of examining the factors affecting school life in attachment to mother, conversation, subfactor of attachment had positive effects on class teacher, friend, learning activity, observing rule, and school exercise which is sub-factors of adaptation to school life; so, the higher attachment to mother's conversation, the higher adaptation to school life children showed.
Overall, there is difference between attachment to mother and adaption to school life according to multicultural characteristics of these children. Also, it was found that the attachment to mother of children in multicultural family affects school life with significant correlation between attachment to mother and school life.
