The purpose of this study is to search for the plan to improve novel texts used in Korean language education targeting intermediate· advanced level learners.
First, we examined the characteristics of textbooks used in Korean language institutes auxiliary to universities with intermediate·advance learners as targets in order to see how novel texts appear specifically in the current Korean language education. As the result, we could see that there is no particular relation in the selection of works for the different textbooks, and also in terms of structure, there were considerable difference from a textbook to another.
The level of vocabulary appearing in the texts is an especially crucial element that has a direct effect on deciding the difficulty of the text. In order to examine the vocabulary in the texts more specifically, we analyzed vocabularies used in Hwang Soon-won’s <Rain Shower>(소나기) and Kim Yu-jeong’s <Spring•Spring>(봄•봄) which are novels contained in textbooks for Korean language education. First, we drew vocabulary from novel texts, sorted them by their parts of speech according to the school grammar, and then examined the numbers and proportion of vocabulary. Next, we presented analyzed vocabulary in four grades of A, B, C, and Out of Rank according to significance based on the ‘Vocabulary List for Learning Korean Language’ (2002) published by The National Institute of the Korean Language.
Based on these results of the analysis, it was confirmed that vocabulary used in novel texts could be too difficult for the foreign learners of Korean language. This is the reason why literary texts including novels were not chosen in actual Korean language education scenes despite active discussions on the rightful reason of literary education so far. It is because the improvement in Korean proficiency using such methods is hard to expect with foreign learners having a difficult time with even the basic interpretations of the novel texts.
Therefore, novel texts used for teaching Korean language needs active reconstruction of altering difficult vocabulary according to the learners’ levels. It is because when using novel texts as textbooks, learners’ understanding of the text must be put into consideration first. Moreover, we presented the numbers and difficulty of vocabulary appearing in the texts so that the learners can choose the textbooks appropriate for their level.
In the novels, which are realistic texts, nonstandard colloquial speech, incorrectly spelled vocabulary, dialects, slangs, etc. appear, and these tend to be quite difficult to understand for foreign learners of Korean language. Therefore, words used relatively frequently among these need to remain as intact as possible, but annotation or interpretation on the vocabulary must be presented, and parts with meanings hard to clarify need to be replaced with other vocabulary within the boundary in which the flow of the text is not broken.
According to these standards, we reconstructed original texts of <Rain Shower> and <Spring•Spring>. Moreover, definitions of advanced vocabulary were attached and nonstandard colloquial speech, dialects, slangs, etc. were annotated to help the learners’ understanding.
In this study we searched for the plan for the improvement based on vocabulary analysis on novel texts used in current textbooks for Korean language education. For this, we proposed reconstruction of the texts in order to fix the difficulties learners of Korean language face with vocabulary in novel texts. Reconstruction through selection of vocabulary according to the learner’s level could be applied to Korean language education using Korean literary texts overall including not only the novels but poems, s, etc. as well.
